Watch the Value of Everyone Length: 2:42 min Switch Engineer IIIOCCUPATION:General/Other: Engineering POSITION OVERVIEW: JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for managing the central office switches deployed by Charter Communications. Specifically responsible for performing or providing support for the following functional areas: Operations, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning. Switches may be Constant Bit Rate (CBR)/ Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) or packet based such as Voice Over IP soft switches. Able to resolve the cast majority of telephony network trouble tickets without assistance. Provides troubleshooting assistance to entry level & mid level switch engineers. Able to direct the trouble shooting efforts during major outages.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:Contribute to the Company vision of being the industry leader in customer service through quality, commitment, courtesy and teamworkResponsible for the management of Switch data architecture.Troubleshoots IP connectivity issues.Assists field in troubleshooting NIU ( Network Interface Unit ) issues.Manages switch hardware, to include Constant Bit Rate (CBR)/ Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) or packet based switches such as Voice Over IP soft switches.Manages Switch tables and directories; populates and maintains required data in switch database to allow switch configuration for Charterâ??s network and provisioning of customer orders.  Responsible for developing processes and procedures to allow switch platforms to be integrated into billing systems, trouble management systems, LNP (Local Number Portability), LIDB (Line Information Database), and other back office database systems.Responsible for all associated ancillary equipment including HVAC (heating, ventilation, AC), Generators, DC Power plants and transmission systems.Documents Switch standards.Configures carrier information and wire tap interface features.Manages switch routing, rate codes and NPA-NXX.Supports Switch software upgrades.Directs the trouble shooting of switch related problems such as but not limited to: AMA failures, transmission or network failures, switch hardware failures etc.Supports the training of entry level and mid level switch engineers.Acts as an operations liaison to other functional groups within Charter.Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:A. Skills/Abilities and KnowledgeAbility to analyze and interpret dataAbility to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and straightforward mannerAbility to communicate with all levels of management and company personnelAbility to handle multiple projects and tasksAbility to make decisions and solve problems while working under pressureAbility to manage multiple projects at one timeAbility to prioritize and organize effectivelyAbility to read, write and speak the English language to communicate with employees, customers, suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straight-forward, and professional and pleasant mannerAbility to show judgement and initiative and to accomplish job dutiesAbility to troubleshoot w/ diagnosticsAbility to use personal computer and software applications (i.e. word processing, spreadsheet, etc.)Ability to work independentlyAbility to work with others to resolve problems, handle requests or situationsKnowledge of Switch software and architectureKnowledge of Oracle database administrationKnowledge of SQLKnowledge of SS7 network element configurationKnowledge of Voice Over IP (VoIP) Knowledge of protocol analysis tools used to troubleshoot layer 2 & 3 issuesKnowledge of UNIX commands Knowledge of ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier), IXC (Inter-exchange Carriers) environmentKnowledge of Wireline, Wireless, or Broadband telephony switch installationKnowledge of Nortel, Cedar Point, Syndeo, or Siemens VoIP platforms preferredB. Education (level and type)Bachelors degree in Telecommunications or related field or equivalent experienceC. Related Work Experience                             Number of Years/Months24/7 operations center work experience                             2 yearsDatabase management and network configuration               3 yearswork experienceWireline, Wireless, or Broadband telephony switch               7 yearsadministration/installationVoIP operations experience in CLEC (Competitive               1 yearLocal Exchange Carrier)          D. Certifications and/or Licenses NARTE, SCTE, or IEEE certifications preferredWORKING CONDITIONS:Office environmentRequires On-call status to support voice switches and associated network elements Send This Link To A Friend
