Splicer - Special Services DS1 Repair
Primary Duties Performs repair functions for DDS, Frame Relay, ISDN BRI, PRI, DS1, and DS3 customer circuits. Works in the central office, in the field, and on customer premises with network elements (SLC, SONET, HDSL, etc.), loop cross-connects, customer premises wiring, and network channel terminating equipment. Uses various hand tools and equipment to make repairs to outside plant. Repairs conductors in aerial and underground cable and customer owed inside wire. Replaces line repeaters on conventional copper spans, HDSL, ISDN and DDS services. Tests functionality and sectionalizes problems for services being installed or repaired using various test sets and remote testing capabilities. Explains services to customers, works to resolve customer understanding of products and services Reviews and interprets service orders, TIRKS documents, and other documents used in the installation and repair of the services in this area. Climbs poles and performs manhole work. May be required to cross train others. Experience / Background Demonstrated experience in the installation or repair of DS1 and DS3 services. Demonstrated experience with outside plant processes including systems used and facility impairments. Demonstrated experience in an assignment requiring significant customer interaction. Demonstrated experience in sectionalizing problems. Demonstrated experience in repair splicing. Demonstrated experience with the installation or repair of basic telephony services including customer premises wiring. Demonstrated experience using various tools and test sets. Prerequisites Technical Education Program - Level I Pole climbing. Company driver’s license. Safety requirements: safety shoes, Weight Restriction Policy applies. Satisfactory performance rating. Technical Education Program - Level IWork Environment Work location: Evanston Garage Opens, pumps and purges manholes in order to perform repair work on underground facilities and apparatus cases. May require day, evening or night hours and overtime, emergency callouts, weekends and holidays. Wears appropriate safety equipment and follows established safety practices and procedures. Performs work both inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Works in various buildings and surroundings, i.e., attics, basements, offices. Interacts with customers on a daily basis. Works independently with minimal supervision. May work for long periods of time in confined areas such as crawl spaces. May work in greasy, dirty or muddy surroundings. May work aloft on poles, hydraulic lift bucket or ladders. Must be trained and/or certified in manhole safety and work area protection.
