Senior Team Lead Engineer, IP Network - Herndon, VA

Position Summary:

Provide worldwide network engineering support for Abovenet Co-location and other IP related customers. Maintain, monitor, install and repair physical/logical network infrastructure and hardware components. Provide expert troubleshooting and design advice to customers. Respond to open tickets from vendors, customers, peers, Abovenet corporate, and any other entity within the scope of job duties. And above all, excellent customer service.

Additionally, this position shall oversee all operational tasks of IP Operations Engineering Department, including project management and verifying proper process and procedures are followed. Provide knowledgeable and experienced answers to common and uncommon situations encountered by IP Network Engineers. Function as an escalation point for IP Network Engineers.

Responsibilities:

•Oversees duties of IP Network Engineers; •Familiarity with official and unofficial (best practice) policies and procedures; •Expertise with Hardware and Software deployed on the Abovenet IP Network; •Troubleshoots issues that have been escalated beyond the abilities of IP Network Engineers; •Escalation point for IP Network Engineers and customers; •Makes judgments based on a experience, knowledge, and a thorough understanding of the Abovenet IP Network; •Coordinates maintenance activities; •Researches and provides post-mortems for Abovenet IP Network events; •Works on projects beyond the scope of IP Network Engineers; •Trains engineers on processes and procedures; •Is generally available to assist during off hour events; •Writing documentation; •The individual must comply with departmental and corporate internal controls and all internal controls processes; •The individual must possess and employ the highest ethical and business standards and always conduct himself/herself with the greatest degree of professional integrity; •Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements:

•Minimum 5 years experience in related field; •Demonstrated leadership abilities; •High School Diploma required, 2-4 year college and/or Industry certifications preferred; •Good Communication skills - written and verbal; •Excellent customer service skills and experience; •Ability to make independent judgments during network events; •Must carry a cell phone 24x7; •Engineers will need to call upon their own experience and company policy to determine the correct action for a given situation. Every situation is unique and will require advanced decision-making and critical thinking skills. Policy may limit some decisions to management level; •Must be proficient to advanced with the UNIX operation system; •PERL scripting abilities preferred; •Must be able to clearly communicate with customers on the phone and by email.
