Radio Frequency Engineer/RF Engineer - White Sands, NM

POSITION SUMMARY Provide lead engineering support and direction to the Radio Communication Group. The Radio Frequency Engineer will work with and lead cross-functional teams to bring assigned project, using project management techniques, including RF, digital and analog communication task to successful completion. Duties require working with NASA and other external customers to support the group's goals and objectives. The RF Engineer will design and direct the installation and operation of complex communication systems that include land mobile radios, microwave links, RF paging systems radio trunking software and database management, and telephone interconnections. Duties include writing reports, maintenance & operating procedures and providing technical and operational training to the Communication Group technicians. Will interact with senior management and senior customer representatives by providing detailed presentations that include cost estimates and resource scheduling. Must be able to develop and modify WSTF job instructions/procedures for validation of communications systems for shuttle preflight activities. Must be able to develop preventive maintenance procedures of all NASA radio and OIS communications systems.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Responsible for managing the NASA portion of the White Sand Regional Trunking System to provide necessary everyday support as well as emergency situational support between NASA, WSMR, USAF, Ft. Bliss, and others who may participate in the system. 2. Responsible for managing the NASA/WSTF radio paging system, to include maintaining continuity with all federal and local agencies to which NASA provides paging services. Must have the ability to develop training plans for customers. 3. Responsible for the development of power supply hardware to support the design, procurement and installation of VHF/UHF two-way radio products. Will be a member of a cross functional development team with hands-on responsibility for the design and support of integrated power supplies, chargers, batteries and other power related products. 4. Analyzes electrical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. 5.Identifies tasks, estimates duration, executes per the schedule: Design, Development, Testing, Debugging and Oversight of operations.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Digital Microwave Radio Experience, Operator control, debugging & testing. Analog Experience: 2 and 4 Wire and knowledge of E&M Signaling echo cancelling, voice compression, computer simulation of analog circuitry. UHF/VHF/HF Radio Experience: Operation and Control both local and remote, debugging & Testing. Land Mobile Radio system design, implementation, maintenance, debugging & testing. ?Installation Experience: Rack and Stack, System Integration Radio or Microwave. Experienced in: Analysis of electrical requirements and determination of design feasibility XWithin schedule & cost constraints. Selection of components and equipment based on analysis of XSpecification and reliability. Review vendor capabilities to Support Development & Service. Test Equipment Experience: Spectrum Analyzers, BER Test sets, Power Measurement Sets, Fiber Optic Test Sets (OTDR, Power Meter and Source), etc. Working Knowledge of Power Systems: UPS Generator, DC Power Systems Rectifiers. A. Education/Skills Requires a BS degree in electrical engineering or computer science. B. Experience Nine (9) years work experience in communications engineering is required. Seventeen (17) years of an equivalent directly relevant work experience may be substituted for the above educational & experience required. C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certification: FCC license (minimum level of General Radio Operators License) is desirable.  Other skills: Auto Cad, Visio, Word, Excel, Access, Project, PowerPoint.
