General Description:
The ideal candidate for Optical Engineering Technician will have demonstrated experience in a fiber optic development and/or production environment. He/she will be analytical, meticulous with details, and possess the skills to work with small precision optical parts and assemblies. An appreciation for the importance of tightly controlled and repeatable processes is critical. He/she will be able to work independently within a team, look for opportunities to make improvements, and be able to clearly communicate through written and verbal means.
Responsibilities:
Conduct experiments on optical components and subassemblies; work independently to structure the experiment, assemble equipment, collect data, and report conclusions
Assemble, inspect, and test opto-mechanical/electronic subassemblies and modules on a prototype manufacturing line; perform detailed and precise assembly operations requiring dexterity in handling small parts and the ability to execute step-by-step instructions in a repeatable fashion
Assist in the development of manufacturing operations and processes, including the specification of custom workstations, fixturing, and/or software
Inspect parts (under microscope or otherwise) for conformance to predefined criteria; make disposition decisions based on findings (e.g. pass, fail, investigate further)
Assist with procurement of parts, return/rework of non-conforming parts, vendor interaction, searching for new/used equipment to satisfy specific criteria
Assist with qualification testing, calibration and maintenance programs
Create documentation to specify assembly processes, test results, etc.
Many other various lab and engineering activities, esp. associated with new product and manufacturing line development
Qualifications:
Associates Degree in engineering or related discipline, BS preferred
4+yrs experience in an R&D/mfg environment with hi-tech/electronic/precision products
2+yrs experience with fiber optic products and related mfg processes
precision alignments, tight-tolerance assembly with/without active feedback
bonding optical elements, epoxy handling, cleaning and prep work
fusion splicing and general handling of fibers and fiber optic components
Experience and demonstrated competence with production and test equipment (power meters, lasers, OSA, mechanical fixtures/tools, cleaning solvents, etc.)
Familiarity with ESD practices, printed circuit boards, electronics
Experience with maintenance and calibration of test & measurement equipment
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, process instructions, schematics
Familiarity with general production material flow processes: receiving, inspection, inventory transfers, work orders, non-conforming product, rework, RMA
General computer skills and expertise with MSOffice (esp Excel), familiarity with database tools and “C” or similar programming language is a plus
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability and willingness to interface with vendors, write engineering reports as necessary
Ability to plan and prioritize activities, perform and monitor multiple overlapping tasks/operations to meet schedule
