Optical Engineer - White Plains, NY
Position Summary:
Plan, design, engineer, document and provide technical management of AboveNet’s optical equipment installations internally and/or with outside vendors. Work as part of the Optical Engineering team to engineer Layer 1 WDM & SONET optical networks, and to provide comprehensive system solutions to meet customer technical requirements. Participate in the development of new products in area of optical communications services. Collaborate in the evaluation and certification of new optical networking products and technologies.
Responsibilities:
•Understand AboveNet’s end customer network applications and apply these requirements to the design of an optical network;
•Possess working knowledge of optical transmission design principles including fiber types, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, power budgeting, ORL, wavelength planning and traffic analysis;
•Determine the necessary optical link budget requirements and recommend amplification or attenuation as required;
•Provide detailed network diagrams for DWDM or CWDM networks; design SONET based transport networks incl. protection schemes (UPSR, BLSR);
•Collaborate with internal departments/external vendors to support product delivery;
•Develop processes and standards to govern the sale, engineering, and implementation of managed optical networks;
•Assemble Customer Delivery Document upon the completion of the installation;
•Maintain and update databases with customer/order info and engineering records for tracking and support functionality;
•Create installation documents for specific DWDM or CWDM installations;
•Develop specialized test and activation procedures for AboveNet’s Operations and NOC in support of DWDM or CWDM networks; possess an understanding of testing methodologies; BERT (bit error rate testing), OSNR (optical signal to noise ratio), OSA (optical spectrum analysis), RFC2544 testing etc.;
•Collaborate with the Long Haul optical group in the delivery of hybrid products;
•Assist in performing lab testing and certification of new hardware, software releases and features for deployment in the production network;
•Provide 3rd Level Support to the AboveNet NOC on in the event network troubleshooting is required;
•The individual must comply with departmental and corporate internal controls and all internal controls processes;
•The individual must possess and employ the highest ethical and business standards and always conduct himself/herself with the greatest degree of professional integrity;
•Other duties and responsibilities as required.
Requirements:
•A Bachelors degree in technology, engineering or computer science or equivalent experience;
•In-depth technical understanding of the components in optical telecommunications networks and a demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate technical data, methods and procedures;
•Working knowledge of DWDM or CWDM gear. Experience with Nortel, Cisco, Ciena, and ADVA a plus;
•Understanding of SONET;
•Experience with LAN/WAN design and/or implementation including router/switch installations and frame relay services;
•Must communicate effectively;
•Possess strong organizing, planning and interpersonal skills to lead and motivate a diverse group performing multiple assignments in a rapidly changing technological environment;
•Knowledge of use of optical test equipment.
