NMC Manager - Herndon, VA

Position Summary:

Manager of team providing 24x7x365 Network Surveillance and Network Administration for the full spectrum of products and services employed internally and sold by AboveNet. Position will be required to work swings, mids and weekend tours.

Responsibilities: • NMC Manager maintains a broad span of control and influence across all facets of Service Assurance for AboveNet’s dark fiber optical managed networks and IP products; • Ensures immediate communication with customers impacted by outage and directs efforts to mitigate the impact of events and to remedy the problem. Acts as a point of escalation for all customer issues; • Monitors and reports on performance of NMC and staff; • Responsible for the management coaching and development of NMC personnel; • Responsible for Change Management scheduling and administration across all networks; • Develops and drives deployment of performance measurement tools within the NMC • Develops practices and policies related to monitoring maintenance and repair of network; • Responsible for preparing internal and external Post Mortems on all outages.

Major Responsibility Area % of Total Job: • 20% Ensure customer SLAs are maintained including escalations and notifications; • 20% Ensure alarms and customers issues documented and escalated with appropriate entities • 20% Change Management Administration; • 20% Develop and Report on NMC Performance • 10% Perform functions related to personnel (Training Development); • 10% Develop processes and policies. Decision/Course of Action: • Position requires independent judgment on a regular basis; • Judgments are based on experience and technical knowledge in addition to protocol; • The manager is expected to be able to direct activities regardless of the product or issue.

Working Relationships: • Interacts with peers to coordinate activities and events as they occur; • Works directly with customers during times of relative crisis and angst; • Will act as technical and procedural escalation point during shift and on pager/cell; • Will work with functional management to research and develop post mortems.

• The individual must comply with departmental and corporate internal controls and all internal controls processes; • The individual must possess and employ the highest ethical and business standards and always conduct himself/herself with the greatest degree of professional integrity; • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements: • High School or G.E.D. required, College preferred; • 6+ years Management experience in telecom NOC or Telecom support environment; • Strong computer skills MS Windows *nix (Solaris/Redhat/FreeBSD preferred); • Experience in the operation and maintenance of networks; • Experience and training on at least two of the following: SONET/SDH/ASYNC transmission equipment, fiber optic test equipment, IP networking routers, firewalls, etc.; • Proven ability and knowledge of network management systems and diagnostic methods; • Good communication and inter-personal skills are essential; • Must be able to express thoughts clearly and succinctly in both conversation and writing; • Skills in foreign language are preferred.
