Director of Research
Scope
The Director of Research will be a key member of the management team, responsible for planning and driving research efforts for the company's family of software products. Projects include extending the technology to new air interfaces (e.g., WiMAX, LTE/EPS, WiFi), new location service applications (e.g., network optimization, traffic monitoring, surveillance, zone services), and performance improvements
(e.g., location accuracy, time to fix, reducing deployment/maintenance costs). The Director of Research will work closely with counterparts in the engineering organization to mature the company's development processes and be responsible for successful transitions of products from research into development and deployment. Specific responsibilities include:
Successfully plan, organize, staff and lead a location technology group, including algorithm engineers, systems engineers and
location technologists. The group's resources include in-house staff as well as various outside consultants, including university faculty members.
Guide technology development efforts in new air interfaces, new applications and performance improvements. Set priorities, plan and communicate schedules, objectives and milestones. Track progress to successful product rollout.
Develop, manage, and maintain strong relationships with engineering development department. Ensure sound processes, documentation and test procedures are in place to move products from concept through development into successful commercial operation.
Contribute to R&D efforts by making technical advances in areas of expertise, including algorithm design, common air interfaces, position location methods, radio propagation and/or statistical methods.
Work closely with staff to develop long and short range strategic plans that are consistent and supportive of the Company's goals and objectives.
Qualifications
The Director of Research must be highly entrepreneurial and a strategic thinker with a track record of proven success in creating new technologies in wireless, telecom or related markets. He/she must have a solid understanding of how to build and manage R&D organizations.
Must have strong leaderships skills and the ability to attract and build a strong R&D team. Should be able to listen, lead by example, and empower his/her organization.
Outstanding technical leader with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Algorithm design (position location, power control, handover, Rake receiver, equalizer, beamforming)
Wireless air interface protocols (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA, CDMA2000/EV-DO, iDEN, WiFi, WiMax, LTE/EPS)
Position location methods (RSSI, TDOA, AOA, FDOA, triangulation, multilateriation, GPS/A-GPS)
Radiowave propagation modeling (Hata, COST-231, diffraction, clutter, ray tracing, GIS)
Statistical methods (maximum likelihood estimation, robust statistics, Markov models, large margin classifiers and support vector machines, clustering, outlier detection)
Should have a high level of technical knowledge and ability to communicate effectively with engineers and sophisticated technology customers.
Prefer experience with the development of new products into large wireless networks. Familiar with engineering development and verification processes, including product life cycle (PLC), change request (CR/MR) and version control.
MS degree (PhD preferred) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Math or a closely relevant field is desired. At least 5 years experience leading research or development efforts in wireless or related technologies.
Excellent compensation and benefits available to the right candidate
