Broadband Optical Network Technician - Grande Communications®
Grande Communications® is currently seeking a Broadband Optical Network Technician in the Dallas area. This position is responsible for all of the activities that pertain to the day-to-day operations on Grande's Regional fiber network to include maintaining and administrating DWDM, SONET, DC Power systems, collocation, rack configurations, metro interconnections, OSP fiber routes, POP and ILA sites, optical and electrical facilities. Grande's Broadband Optical Network Technician will also be required to provide assistance at Switch sites, along with participating in on-call rotation for Switch and Fiber POP sites.
In this role, the primary responsibilities will include:
· Review all appropriate orders in the work flow management system as necessary to implement services and/or facilities required for network installations, additions, changes, disconnects, and reconfigurations. Ensure all components are properly connected through the necessary slotting, jumpers, cross-connects, etc. Provide accurate and timely documentation on all circuit records, equipment inventory, spares and assigned projects;
· Perform all duties essential to the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, monitoring and repair of all fiber optic transmission systems (FOTS), multiplexing equipment, cabling, circuits, etc.;
· Ensure reliability of the fiber optic network through regular inspection & routine preventative maintenance and maintain integrity of the network via accurate files, inventory, and PM records on all equipment (DWDM, SONET, DC Power Plants, etc.);
· Perform preventative maintenance inspections on all power systems. This includes rectifier / charger bays, battery strings, generators and transfer switches. This will involve quarterly cell readings on all battery strings and documentation of these readings in the GFN Battery sheet, as well as monthly measurement and documentation of “pilot cell” readings. This will also include monthly inspection of all generators. This inspection will be performed and documented via a supplied checklist;
· Maintain safe working environment and keep tools in working order. Report any safety concerns to supervisor;
· Responsible for managing and maintaining POP, collocation and associated ILA/regen in a clean and professional condition and ensure timely maintenance of assigned company vehicle;
· Provide technical support to all internal departments, outside contractors, as well as any wholesale and retail customers as necessary;
· Be prepared (as scheduling permits) to work in tandem with switch personnel in areas where switch facilities exist (Dallas, Houston, and the SA/Austin corridor). Also, work with local designated switch personnel to facilitate the sharing of on-call duties;
· Other related duties as assigned.
Our ideal candidate will possess:
· High School Diploma or equivalent;
· Minimum of three (3) years of similar experience in telecommunications industry;
· Extensive experience with DWDM & SONET equipment with respect to installation, provisioning, acceptance testing, and maintenance;
· At least rudimentary skills with respect to inspection and maintenance of DC power facilities, HVAC, and standby generators;
· Strong understanding of the engineering aspect of fiber optic networking and long haul & metro transport design;
· Willingness and capability to work after hours when outages occur or when maintenance window tasks are scheduled;
· Demonstrated ability to work effectively under stressful conditions with little direct supervision;
· Strong PC and communication (written, verbal, spoken) skills;
· Outstanding customer service (internal and external customers) skills.
