Description of position:  This individual performs all levels of strategic planning necessary to support and maintain a large, complex iSeries environment, IBM Operating systems, licensed program products, and OEM (3rd party) packages.  This position is responsible for keeping up with technological advances and be able to translate new technology into improvements in Costco’s iSeries environment.  The individual filling this position will also be expected to deliver excellent customer service to the entire community and interact in a highly-effective manner with other team members. 

 

Daily tasks and responsibilities

·  Plan and complete major iSeries hardware and software upgrades and maintenance.

·  Plan and manage License Program Product installations and PTF maintenance across multiple iSeries.

·  Proactively manage system resources to assure maximum system performance.

·  Manage the planning, implementation and upgrades of OEM packages.

·  Provide user community support issues using Service Center, email and voicemail.

·  Diagnose and resolve system problems by working with System Service Tools, VLIC logs, System error logs, and iSeries problem determination manuals.

·  Understand and perform advanced control panel functions on the iSeries (scratch, O/S installs and DST).

·  Plan, configure and implement advanced communications features on the iSeries (APPC, APPN, TCP/IP and other connections required).

·  Work with new technologies on the iSeries and be able to apply them when beneficial.

·  Serve as a mentor and provide guidance to other team members and IS personnel.

·  Occasional off-hours work required including weekends and holidays; provide 24 by 7 on-call pager support.

·  Participation in off-site DR tests and occasional travel may be required.

 

Qualifications

·  Excellent trouble shooting skills and the ability to logically think through problem situations.

·  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·  Able to work effectively and produce consistent results with a minimum of supervision.

·  Self-motivated, responsible, conscientious, and detail oriented.

·  Able to work well under stress and handle crisis situations professionally.

·  Possess thorough understanding of iSeries connectivity at a physical and logical level (V.35, V.24, Token Ring, Ethernet, Opticonnect, Tape, Workstations, etc.).

·  Possess thorough understanding of PTF maintenance procedures.

·  Possess thorough understanding of all aspects of iSeries work management and save/restore.

·  Able to plan, install and implement software packages (OEM, O/S, etc.).

·  Possess basic understanding of iSeries security.

·  Possess strong understanding of  WebSphere and Apache web server

·  Ability to easily adapt to a rapidly changing work environment.

·  Ability to work in a highly technical environment.

·  3 years experience with CL programming, Sequel or other system utilities.

·  5 years experience in iSeries technical support role

 

Knowledge and talents recommended for job success

·  B.S. degree in Computer Science or equivalent formal training and experience

·  Ability to read and understand RPG program logic.

·  Possess an in-depth knowledge of the iSeries communication features.
