Inbound Transportation Manager
PetSmart currently has an opening for an Inbound Transportation Manager located at the Corporate Offices in Northwest Phoenix. SUMMARY This position is responsible for effective management of a transportation team and coordinating, measuring, and improving service levels from our suppliers into PetSmart Distribution Centers. This includes training and developing the team to meet or exceed financial targets and key performance indicators. Create department goals and set expectations for performance. Measure and report on all parts of the transportation operation, evaluate progress and recommend change by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate associates. Manage performance through regular feedback, coaching, and performance appraisals. Develop and execute strategies based on supply chain requirements, DC and carrier balance and volume levels. Participate in department budget process. Responsible for achieving the best company service and in stock conditions, as well as meeting company standards, optimizing the landed cost of goods. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. This position is accountable for the development of a high performance, customer centric team. Manage, direct and develop subordinates responsible for planning transportation from suppliers into stores and distribution centers. Directly supervise Transportation Planners and 3rd Party Carriers who manage planning and execution of transportation service and cost metrics. Develop associates through coaching, mentoring, performance management, talent management and succession planning. Identify associate training and development needs. Oversee all transportation processes used to achieve key metrics. Represent the Transportation team as a knowledgeable resource in discussions with other business partners. Utilize business expertise and technical knowledge to coordinate Transportation needs and requirements. Improve transportation efficiency, maximizing service, costs, reducing overall lead time and maximizing in-stock levels. Provide insight regarding strategy and process improvement. Participate in the budget process, meeting service and expense goals. Deliver on budget of approximately $60 Million. Achieve quantitative goals and key performance indicators related to service levels, expenses, network optimization, in-stock and others as defined by SLA (service level agreements). Interface with internal and external customers and build cross-functional relationships (Merchandising, Outbound Transportation, Distribution, 3rd party carriers, Replenishment, Stores, Finance, etc.). Coordinate and integrate transportation activities with other departments, developing strong partnerships. Continuously maintain and improve Distribution partnerships by providing quick and accurate responses to appointments, balance needs, load quality, resource concerns and opportunities as well as monitoring cost. Provide the best service levels and improvement in stock conditions available for the company while meeting company standards and goals. Monitor performance, measure compliance, identify trends and systemic failure points. Work with partners to establish action plans to improve performance. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Manage 2 Transportation Planners and indirectly manage approximately 20 3rd party carriers. Position is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Inbound Transportation unit. Manager must carry out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from accredited four-year college or university, five to eight years related experience, and two to four years experience managing multiple direct reports. Equivalent combination of education, training and experience considered. Retail or grocery supply chain experience is a plus. SYSTEMS and APPLICATIONS SKILLS Excellent computer skills, including an advanced knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. Proven analytical skills, proactive and solution oriented. Experience with replenishment and planning systems preferred. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to apply intermediate and advanced mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to understand mathematical and statistical operations in such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS • Detail oriented with strong managerial, planning, organization and project management skills • Strong ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize • Mediate differences of opinion and facilitate resolution when conflicts arise • Facilitate group discussions for maximum idea generation and problem solving • Participate actively in cross-functional initiatives and projects • Excellent communication skills at all levels of the organization • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills • Solid understanding of transportation, supply chain, store operations and merchandising principles and their integration with the transportation activities • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop associates • Ability to develop best practices in performance management • Ability to provide career coaching to team members • Comprehensive understanding of logistics industry, current trends, economics and operating systems. • Clear understanding and knowledge of federal, state and local regulations governing the transportation industry.
