Data Engineer
PURPOSE:
Urban Outfitter's Inc. is looking for a dynamic individual to play a central role within its IT Engineering Group. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing, designing, developing and maintaining complex database systems and applications. The candidate will develop architectural road maps to fully integrate systems, data and applications. He/she will perform data modeling studies as well as maintain data modeling diagrams. The Data Engineer will also be responsible for quality control and auditing of databases to ensure accurate and appropriate use of data.
The qualified candidate will review object and data models and the data repositories to structure data for better management and full integration. The successful candidate will also work with management and business customers to architectural solutions that solve business needs. Act as a source of direction, training and mentoring to other staff members.
ORGANIZATION RELATIONSHIPS:
Works closely with business partners in the US & Europe at all levels. Role requires developed communication and diplomacy skills. Partners with field employees and management at all levels. Builds relationships and partners with external vendors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Design and develop ETL processes, SQL Server Databases, Analysis Services cubes, and assist with front end applications using BI Tools for the data warehouse / business intelligence and other related initiatives. Participate in reporting and models application design and development. Perform related business requirement analysis, project management, support and other duties consistent with this level of responsibility. The responsibilities of this role include hands-on development work with SQL Server 2005, Integration Services, Analysis Services, and SQL Reporting Services, writing relational and OLAP database queries using T-SQL, MDX, and .NET, and designing end-to-end data warehousing solutions supporting ETL integration, data integrity and quality management, and data aggregation and cube processing.
REQUIRED SKILLSSignificant experience with data warehouse/business intelligence development, including ETL and BI tools. Experience and knowledge of Microsoft technologies, including SQL Server RDBMS, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Integration Services, ProClarity Analytics Server, and MDX Query language experience preferred. Strong knowledge of relational database modeling principles, techniques and best practices. Strong experience with dimensional modeling and knowledge of principles, techniques and best practices. Excellence knowledge of software development lifecycle. Experienced with MS SharePoint 2007. Experience with AS/400 and/or HP3000 a plus. Experience with MS Performance Point 2007 a plus.
Project Responsibilities:Support the planning and installation of new systems and upgrades. Demonstrate a good understanding of project management and full project life cycle. Proactively identify problems and potential areas for improvement and translate those into work requests/business proposals. Provide input to a task level work plan, identifying activities and hours estimates for all systems development lifecycle phases of the effort. Develop technical design specifications. Participate in vendor software evaluations as necessary.

Develop an understanding of the dynamics and financial issues of Urban Outfitter's business, specifically in his/her area of responsibility.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, skills & abilities: SQL Server architecture, administration and security arenas (a solid grasp of advanced SQL query techniques is strongly desired) DB2 Database Administration, supporting large databases (upwards of 1 TB) Hands on performance monitoring tools and extensive experience in large-scale database performance tuning SQL Reporting Services and standard reporting paradigms Excellent understanding of the project lifecycle
Minimum educational level:
B.S. in Computer Science/Engineering (Preferred)
Experience:
Minimum 5 years experience in DBA or applications development position
