Sony PlayStation: Staff Software Engineer
Sony PlayStation®: Staff Software Engineer
San Diego, California Responsibilities: The SCEA Online Technology Group, SCE-RT, provides a networking solution for all Sony Computer Entertainment gaming platforms. The networking architecture supports both client-server and peer-to-peer models and works within and across SCEI territories worldwide. SCE-RT has organized a small group of full time Network Developers called SCE-RT Network Consultants that implement Network game code for a wide range of high profile game titles. The ideal candidate will have a B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent and at least 5 years experience working as a senior software engineer (C/C++). The ideal candidate will have worked on at least one shipping title as a Network Developer. The position requires excellent written and oral communication skills in order to be able to interface with internal developers, external studio developers, producers, line managers and project managers.
Responsibilities: Communicate with external development studios and producers to plan and design network features, including both client side and server side development. Schedule the implementation with the producers and studio engineers. Coordinate with SCEA departments such as IT to plan for the server requirements. Implement and advise on the network implementation. Validate solutions. Generate and interpret benchmarks to quantify the solution for performance and correctness. Evaluate changes to optimize the solution. Handoff and educate the studios on the implementation such that the studio can support and modify the solutions going forward.
Qualifications: Professional and interpersonal communication (E-mail, phone, face to face). Interface with other SCEA groups (Tools and Tech, FPQA, IT, etc...), external developers (1st and 3rd party Game Studios), and producers. Understand the entire suite of software options available to realize the designers’ goals (SCE-RT solutions, PlayStation® Network Platform technologies, etc). Schedule and coordinate required tasks, qualify and document the solutions. Applicant is knowledgeable of good software practices, revision control systems, and works efficiently and independently. Multithreaded C/C++ programming of a largely asynchronous distributed system, in UNIX and Windows environments. Network and real-time system programming. Ability to write efficient, clear, well-commented, maintainable code. Knowledge of development environments such as Linux and Windows, and tools including compilers (e.g. gcc), build tools (make), IDEs (Visual Studio, Visual SlickEdit), source code and asset control systems (Subversion, cvs, Perforce, etc). Analyze, design and implement technical solutions to complex problems. There will be a strong emphasis on verification that the solution is correct and works in real world conditions for large user counts. Previous experience in the gaming industry is always desirable, especially as a network engineer. Experience writing both client and server code is also desired, along with Java, XML and HTML experience.
