Project Editor/Manager
Bedford/St. Martin's is a leading publisher of college textbooks in the disciplines of English, History, Communication, Business and Technical Writing, Philosophy, Religion, and Music. Bedford/St. Martin's was originally two separate divisions of St. Martin's Press, Inc. consisting of the St. Martin’s Press College Division and Bedford Books of St. Martin's Press. The two companies merged and became Bedford/St. Martin's in 1998. Bedford Books was founded in 1981 by Charles Christensen. The St. Martin’s Press College Division was founded much earlier. Position Description:
Reporting to the General Manager of Custom Publishing, the Project Manager will be a key player in the rapidly growing group that publishes custom English, Communication, and History textbooks for colleges and high schools.
Major Responsibilities:
Manage Bedford Select: A database of readings and instructional materials that enables instructors to create their own anthologies. Prepare manuscript and check metadata for all updates to the database.Oversee production of custom textbooks, including some or all of the following: Analyzing (and sometimes creating) text and art manuscripts, preparing manuscripts for composition, checking all stages of proof, securing manuscripts for fm/em and credit lines, and providing manuscripts for art and photos.Work with permissions editors and photo researchers.Supervise the work of interns and/or freelancers.
Required Skills / Knowledge:
Excellent writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills.Electronic editing skills and knowledge of Quark and InDesign a plus. Ability to interact comfortably with college professors and high school teachers by email and phone.Ability to work in an often fast-paced environment and handle several projects simultaneously.Desktop Publishing skills a plus
Experience Needed:
Three years experience in editorial production. College textbook experience a plus.
Educational Background Required:
Bachelor's Degree requiredDegree in humanities a plus
