Executive Director of Engineering
Job Summary The Executive Director of Engineering for Aplia Learning is responsible for defining and developing software and hardware solutions for courseware products that meet the need for technology and desktop applications in the higher education (2 yr 4yr), career, and secondary markets. Primary responsibilities of the position include:Development and management of technology product solutions, covering all facets of the courseware and related platforms and infrastructure. These requirements may include the technical platform, product definition and development, instructional & visual design, content production & asset management and end-user support & training. Success of the products in the marketplace, working directly with customers and ultimately with sales and marketing to sell and promote the product. Promotion and communication of the products and solutions internally to other areas of the Cengage business. Financial responsibility for his/her department and technology solutions and direct accountability for forecasting product revenue and creating acceptable ROI on each project. The role holder will report to the President of Aplia Learning within the Digital Solutions Group. This person must have a “can-do” attitude and be able to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; possess excellent analytical skills; and have demonstrated successful experience at defining, developing and launching online learning products to meet educational impact, customer satisfaction, and competency development goals. Experience10+ years developing customer-focused, web applications for the education market, with fluency in requirements gathering, product definition, systems architecture, system administration, software development and production, testing and deployment. Strong preference given to candidates with previous product management experience related to technology solutions for higher education. Demonstrated expertise in working with customers and SMEs in a consultative technology role, defining and developing solutions to meet customer requirements. Experience with design, development and production of online courseware products. Proven track record in successfully leading cross-functional teams to develop online products. Ability to relate innovation in technology, and instructional and visual design to current needs of the higher education market. Strong skills in leadership, facilitation, and communication, both written and oral. Comfortable working with and presenting to faculty and institutional administrators. Ability to work effectively in a start up environment – familiar with concept testing, rapid prototyping and development of customer-driven requirements. Management experience with technology functions, including IT, software engineering, technical support, product planning, production. EducationBA/BS degree required; Graduate degree preferred.
