Accountant II

The New York Times Shared Services Center is the Business Solutions Provider for one of the world's premier media companies. Located in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, the SSC is a centralized facility for streamlining many of the Company's functions. The four main areas of responsibility are: Benefits, Financial Services, Strategic Sourcing and Contracts, and Information Technology Services.

Purpose

To work in a team environment supporting various Accounting processes including reconciliations and month-end close.

Responsibilities
-Perform account reconciliations that the Finance department is responsible for (i.e. payroll/benefit, foreign bureaus, intercompany).
-Perform analytical review on selected General Ledger accounts and research unexpected or unusual results.
-Use judgment to select proper accounting treatment of new issues, and create journal entries to record to the General Ledger.
-Respond to questions from business units regarding general accounting and/or PeopleSoft system matters and investigate and resolve GL accounting inconsistencies.
-Assist with General Ledger gap analysis and system testing during PeopleSoft upgrades and updates, as needed.
-Assist with documenting and maintaining department procedures.

-Business unit controllers, accounting staff and other personnel
-Managers and staff in the Corporate Controller's department
-Managers and staff in the Corporate Treasurer's department
-SSC managers and staff
-Bank personnel

Technical Knowledge/Skills
-Experience with financial systems
-Experience with PeopleSoft
-Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office required

Education or Certifications: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required

Work Experience: 3 - 5 years of related work experience required.

-Demonstrate analytical, methodical and resourceful approach in problem solving work atmosphere.
-Good verbal and written communication skills, necessary to articulate ideas and prepare analyses.
-Good interpersonal skills, necessary to build and maintain relationships and interact well across all levels.
-Ability to prioritize and ensure completion of critical tasks.
-Ability to assess and inform supervisor of work related issues.
-Ability to adjust to changing priorities, circumstances, and personal interaction styles.
-Effective performance with minimal supervision.
-Good understanding of general accounting concepts and procedures required.
-Ability to convert complex data into meaningful information so actionable plans can be developed.
