Senior Network Engineer #21751
The Network Operations and Engineering group is responsible for designing, maintaining, and monitoring Tufts' campus-wide data network. This includes switches, routers, wireless access points, DNS/DHCP servers, and other network devices. The group is also involved with the Internet2 community, conformity with open standards, and liaison with other academic networking groups and initiatives. In addition, it oversees all IP and namespace management, internal and external routing protocols, network capacity planning, monitoring, and security. The security obligations within the network engineering group fall under the management of the Security Team Leader, who reports to the Manager of Network Engineering. These involve policies, practices, network scanning, intrusion detection and prevention, and firewall services.
The successful candidate for the position will provide leadership, technical expertise, and hands-on knowledge, in all areas of network engineering, design, ongoing operations, monitoring, and trouble-shooting relating to the enterprise data network, but especially the ISC DHCP and DNS servers. This includes the installation and maintenance of network equipment, monitoring of network performance, and systems administration of network devices and hosts with a particular emphasis on switches, routers, load balancers and utility servers. The use and creation of utility, IP address, and equipment databases and resources is also a responsibility of this position. Experience in the management of Cisco, Foundry, F5 and Juniper switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, load balancers and wireless networking hardware is required.
The position assumes advanced, hands-on IP data network experience, design background, and security experience. UNIX-based technical skills, open source experience, and effective communication skills are very important. The candidate’s work history must include operations and network management experience with routed IP networks, layer two/three switches, advanced routers, firewall, LAN/WAN networking hardware and protocols, and managing DNS/DHCP servers and other host registration systems. The ability to work with, contribute to, and communicate within a technical team environment in an independent, self-motivated way is critical, as is the ability to work with users and stakeholders with varied technical backgrounds.
The successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience with ISC DHCP servers, DNS, host registration systems, PHP, MySQL, Apache, perl, software development and scripting in a UNIX environment. Ability to work in a time-critical environment with focus on prioritizing and delegating tasks is necessary. Higher education experience is very helpful. UNIX and windows server system administration experience is highly desirable. Some on-call work is required as needed or assigned.
