Provides leadership and direction, which supports the drug and vaccine discovery and development processes. Manages various aspects of the program to ensure humane animal care and use; regulatory compliance; fiscal prudence; personnel management; training; occupational health and safety; maintenance of the physical plant and equipment; security; and adherence to the Wyeth values, Code of Conduct and policies. Provides counsel to both site and WR leadership on animal care and use issues, as appropriate.Job ResponsibilitiesDirects all activities of a BioResources Department, either directly or through subordinate directors and managers. Interacts with research leadership to ensure strategic vision and plans are aligned to facilitate the development of new pharmaceuticals. Utilizes the strategic vision to implement sound operational practices within the Department. Serves as the Attending Veterinarian (AV) or delegates those responsibilities. Provides administrative support to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and ensures that BioResources personnel actively participate in IACUC activities and that research is conducted in accordance with protocols and processes that have been approved by the IACUC. Ensures that activities within the vivaria comply with applicable regulations, i.e. USDA, FDA, state and local. Maintains the Animal Care and Use Program in accordance with the guidelines promulgated by the National Research Council, as applicable.Designs, prescribes, and implements elements of veterinary care programs including disease surveillance, diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention in laboratory animals. Establishes procedures to develop animal models and provide technical support for WR programs. Ensures that any surgical or potentially painful procedures are conducted in accordance with the current state of the art of veterinary surgical and medical care, and that either the AV or their designee is consulted in the planning of such procedures.Manages the Department’s capital and operating budgets to target. Directs the administrative activities of all BioResources operations including expense approvals; staffing; personnel assignments; design, construction and allocation of animal related research facilities; to ensure timely, efficient and high-quality support. Provides appropriate justifications, projections and adjustments as needed.Ensures that the BioResources staff is trained and qualified to perform their duties. Provides subject matter expertise to the IACUC Chair and senior research leadership to ensure that both the IACUC and research personnel are qualified to perform their duties related to the animal care and use program.Serves as a liaison between organizations whose work impacts on the care and use of laboratory animals and WR. Maintains active participation in the laboratory animal medicine and scientific communities.Basic QualificationsDoctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD)Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM)Must have completed a formal residency in laboratory animal medicine or have greater than 8 years of experience in the field, including managerial experience.Five to eight years of pharmaceutical and managerial experience in the field of laboratory animal science are required. Clearly demonstrated ability to work independently, have sound judgment, and problem solving abilities.
