SUMMARY: Supervise and prepare test samples; set up and perform tests according to laboratory procedures and specifications; maintain a clean and organized work area; use and troubleshoot equipment; clean and maintain test equipment; enter data into databases and use PC applications; perform work and calculations for physical and chemical tests of sample materials; keep clear, accurate laboratory notebooks, understand chemical hazards and corrosive properties; assist senior personnel and work from written instructions; inspect laboratory to maintain a safe working environment and report unsafe conditions; observe, monitor, and record instrumentation results during testing to insure test parameters are maintained within test specifications; supervise and perform routine analysis to check applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data; train and supervise subordinate staff in technical area of expertise, conduct technical sessions; effectively communicate with clients and peers concerning project activities; write and present reports or presentations; act independently to solve problems and promote projects to clients; conduct conventional investigations independently.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Requires a BS degree in Chemistry or closely related field with 1-2 years experience in chemistry and 1 year experience with Gas or Liquid chromatography instruments. Must have familiarity with Gas Chromatography (GC), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) or Ion Chromatography (IC). Experience with toxic/hazardous chemicals preferred; knowledge of scientific principles, analytical methodology, tasks, materials, and tools associated with chemical laboratories required; knowledge of safety rules MSDSs and general laboratory chemical procedures; knowledge of advanced mathematic functions and formulas of chemistry; analytical instrumentation background is preferred; requires computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet software, and good troubleshooting skills; knowledge of wet chemistry techniques (i.e. titration, sample preparation, and density); experience with Gas or Liquid Chromatography a plus; past experience communicating with professional staff and provided key support to scientific and engineering and/or more senior technical support staff; requires leadership abilities including supervision of technicians and laboratory assistants; continued skill development, practical knowledge, technical understanding, and a degree of creativity and latitude is expected in performing work in laboratories, testing environments, or other service or operating facilities; must practice regular attendance have the ability to work closely with others and work effectively in a group, and or work alone as necessary. Shift work is required. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
