SUMMARY: Perform experiments in thin film fabrication, process optimization and thin film development; assist in developing and promoting new research initiatives with existing and prospective commercial and government clients; investigate approaches to address emerging technology needs, including nano-engineered materials, ultra-hard materials, hydrogen storage materials and materials for sensors; plan, promote and execute the development of crosscutting chemical and physical techniques to meet program development goals in nanotechnology, hydrogen storage, pre-cursor chemistries for vacuum-based processes and ultra-hard materials; prepare research plans, develop proposals to government agencies and commercial companies and participate in technical and promotional seminars.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Requires a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, or Chemistry or related engineering discipline with a 3.2 GPA. Must be able to work independently, yet collaborate in a team-oriented environment; interpersonal skills to lead and direct laboratory staff and communicate effectively with peers; proficiency in the use of computers for office and laboratory tasks as well as basic computational methods. Must have experience with vacuum-based coating and surface treatment processes such RF and DC magnetron sputtering particularly in fabricating sophisticated multiplayer architectures. Experience in sol-gel, self-assembly colloids, surfactant, block co-polymer templating methods, hydrothermal, co-precipitation, and emulsion coating technologies.


SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: This is a one year limited term assignment.
