Job SummaryA senior level scientist who is a proven performer in both the basic and applied aspects of drug discovery and synthetic chemistry. An individual who is recognized for a contribution to scientific research by peers within and outside of the company, and not simply a position based on seniority. A senior level scientist working independently who has demonstrated track record of accomplishment and recognition for expertise in area of specialization. Demonstrated scientific leadership and strong interpersonal and coaching skills through team roles and mentoring of other scientists. Job ResponsibilitiesTakes an active role as a team member in discovery and/or development projects, serves as a resource and a mentor to team members and may serve as a team leader or as champion of programs. Direct Discovery Synthetic Chemistry (DSC) supervisors to coordinate activities and insure timely and quality deliveries. Prioritize DSC assignments and adapt to changing needs. Administer and assign programs and PreDevelopment team membership, monitor workflow and adjust work plan as needed. Coordinate and balance assignments between DSC and external partners with follow-up.Demonstrates special skills and knowledge in synthetic chemistry and scale-up of this chemistry as evidenced by proven successes at the bench and by design of synthetic routes suitable for scale up. Demonstrates a high level of initiative, particularly when problems are encountered in synthesis and solid state forms that require troubleshooting. Oversees work on several complex synthesis requests in parallel.Serves as an adviser to discovery or development teams in area of synthesis and solid-state properties.Work closely with Department Head and advise on experimental and logistical matters. Point person in operational activities with Discovery Analytical Chemistry (DAC), Physical and Chemical Characterization (PCC), MedChem, Chemical Development, and Pharm SciencesReads and understands the scientific literature with particular insight, as proven by design, implementation, and interpretation of results of novel experiments. Consistently demonstrates scientific curiosity through reading and talking to colleagues. Exhibits exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, allowing dissemination of complex scientific issues to a diverse audience. Generally recognized by the Division head and within the Company as an expert in a synthetic chemistry, scale-up and solid state issues.Research, publications and professional activities have demonstrable impact within and outside the company. Makes presentations outside of the company on a regular basis. Regularly reaches scientific milestones as evidenced by scientific publications. Maybe required to present results of independent experiments at internal governance meetings, write reports for internal communications as well as invention records and complete scientific papers for peer reviewed journals.Contribute to the discovery of new products through the advancement of scientific knowledge in synthesis and solid-state properties of small molecules. Shows maturity as a scientist either through proven ability to contribute to drug discovery or exploratory research projects. Consulted for input on projects by both peers and management on a routine basis.Exhibits exceptional professional maturity as exemplified by:a) Encouraging career development for staff.b) Promoting interactions within and outside of group.c) Attending management classes.Proven ability to train scientific staff in laboratory techniques. Can successfully lead and manage multiple supervisors and their groups in diverse assignments.Basic QualificationsPh.D. with 12+ years of experience, preferably of which at least 2 are postdoctoral experience and 5 or more are in the pharmaceutical industry, or a Master's Degree with a minimum of 17+ years of experience or a Bachelor's Degree with 20+ years of experience. Only internal candidates with a BS or MS degree will be considered for this position.
