SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

DPDF/IDRF

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC), a not-for-profit organization devoted to the advancement of social science research and scholarship, seeks one or more Program Director(s) to provide leadership for two of its major fellowship programs: the newly created Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship Program (DPDF), and the International Dissertation Field Research (IDRF) Program.  Funding for these programs is provided by the Andrew. W. Mellon Foundation.

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) is a strategic fellowship program designed to help graduate students in the humanities and social sciences formulate doctoral dissertation proposals.  The IDRF program supports dissertation research on international topics by graduate students throughout the social sciences and humanities.  In addition to directing one (or both) of these programs, the Program Director will be expected to take initiative in the development of new projects and programs related to the Council’s areas of focus, and corresponding with his or her field(s) of interest.

This position will require energy, enthusiasm, strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to travel domestically and on occasion internationally.

The best qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in one of the social sciences or a closely related field and at least 7 years experience in the academy or a related area of work. Candidates must have a strong interest in programs designed to support and strengthen the work of young researchers, as well as understand trends and challenges in graduate education in the U.S.  Knowledge of capacity building tools including fellowships is a plus. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively, to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively and to lead and supervise staff teams.

Annual salary will be commensurate with experience.  Comprehensive benefits include health, dental, vision, disability, life, and gym reimbursement; outstanding pension plan and tax savings programs; generous vacation and sick leave; and more.   Provisions are made for professional staff to continue their development as professional social scientists while at the Council.

To apply, candidates must send a detailed letter of application, curriculum vitae and three references.  Please also submit copies of two professional, published, writing samples.
