A. Job Description
Join the TRAC team! TRAC Microbiology, Inc. is a fast growing microbiology and analytical chemistry contract laboratory that conducts Testing, Research, Auditing and Consulting (TRAC) for food and chemical companies. We currently have a Lab Management position available for someone who has the desire to lead and motivate a staff of 30 employees comprising full and part-time employees.  This position reports to the Director of Operations.  The Microbiology Laboratory Manager is part of an 8 member management staff including CEO, CFO, Director of Operations, Director of Sales, Director of Research, Chemistry Laboratory Manager, and Assistant Microbiology Manager.
B. Job Duties
Includes a wide variety of tasks surrounding the overall management of microbiologists and laboratory support staff.   Motivate employees by keeping a positive attitude and acknowledging jobs well performed.
Direct and monitor work flow within the microbiology laboratory and Chemistry departments such that efficient and effective scientific tasks and techniques are performed for clients. Samples are set-up the day of receipt. The daily sample load is unknown, resulting in day-to-day adjustments to work flow.
Oversee the communication of results and scientific information to clients via phone and electronically. Â
Having the ability to be interrupted throughout the day responding to direct reports, employees, customers and management is a necessary skill. The job entails handling multiple tasks throughout the day.                                                                 Â
Ø    Write-up work schedules for a 7 day work week.Â
Ø     Conduct daily lab meetings to facilitate coordination of daily activities
Ø     Oversee and train laboratory employees on test methods, microbiological scientific techniques (aseptic sampling, transfers, plate analysis).Â
Ø     Review lab reports and monthly client billing
Ø     Work with LIMS system
Ø     Lead audits of laboratory
Ø     Act as liaison between clients and laboratory
        ·        Communicate results
        ·        Respond to clients requests for information
 Ø     Write reports for customers as needed
Ø     When necessary, work in the lab to ensure sample flow and understand work demands on  staff.
Ø     Work greater than 40 hours per week, weekends and or holidays as needed. Â
Ø     Communicate to Dir. of Operations on weekly task schedule
Ø     Initiate write-ups and verbal disciplinary actions as needed.
Ø     Submit payroll to CFO for microbiology hourly employees
Ø     Oversee the media and quality control managers
Ø     Facilitate communication between media, research and chemistry departments
C. Successful candidate will possess
Ø     Bachelor of Science in microbiology, food science or related science (Master's degree preferable)
Ø     Minimum of 6 years experience in a laboratory setting (preferably a contract laboratory)
Ø     Proven management experience
Ø     Knowledge of good laboratory practices and aseptic techniques
Ø     Knowledge of pathogen detection techniques, conventional, rapid and genetic.Â
 Ø     Ability to set expectations and follow-up with direct reports.
Ø     Ability to enforce practices and policies.
Ø     Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail.
Ø     Ability to write scientific standard operating procedures.
Ø     Ability to communicate with clarity, firmly and in a timely manner.
