Mental Health Counselor

Under general supervision, conducts initial assessments and psychological screenings and
provides intensive therapeutic counseling to a caseload of prisoners who have been determined to
need mental health or mental retardation services; and also provides case management services to
the caseload of prisoners with behavioral deficits and/or requiring special needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a master's degree of social work, counseling, or psychology, which must
include course work in the provision of mental health services.
OR
Proof of eligibility for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical
Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) and/or Licensed Marriage and
Family Therapist (LMFT).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses prisoners~inmate records and histories, conducts psychological screenings and testing,
and develops individual treatment plans.


Conducts individual and group therapy sessions to meet identified needs of the MH/MR prisoner
population.


Provides appropriate interventions in crisis situations (e.g. inmates behaving aberrantly, illnesses,
self-injuries, family crises) in accordance with therapeutic techniques, protocols, and procedures.

Provides case management services to assigned caseload.

Provides information to the inmate classification committee.

Serves as duty officer on a rotating basis and may serve as backup to the unit manager in his/her
absence. Demonstrates thorough knowledge ofthe facility's rules and regulations, local operating
procedures, and department SOP's by making decisions and directing others, in an acting
capacity, accordingly. Provides specialized services that conform to departmental and institution
standards, Accurately completes necessary forms and records within the established time frame,
Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive materials and information at all times, Develops well
prepared materials and presentations when advocating for members of caseload or other assigned
prisoners to the various committees at the prison.

Maintains a consistent, high quality, customer-focused orientation when conducting business and
providing services or products to the general public and other external customers.

Interacts with all levels of state government in a way that promotes respect, encourages
cooperation and contributes to excellent performance.

Participates as a member of the MHlMR team when assigned to committees that establish and
maintain quality programming.
