The Executive Editor assists in communicating the Association's goals and objectives by planning, preparing, and producing NFPA Journal and its online component.Responsibilities include:

 (A) Planning, preparing, and producing publication.

·        In planning stages, directs the magazine and its online companion content, selects appropriate issue themes, and prepares the annual editorial calendar.  Schedules articles for publication in specific issues and online.

·        Maintains contact with authors to solicit articles from those in the fire protection community. Oversees the assignment of stories to freelance and in-house authors.

·        Oversees article review and approvals process with NFPA staff and outside authors.

·        Coordinates with the Art Director to define the appearance of the magazine, approving cover art concepts and feature article illustrations.

·        Coordinates with Advertising staff to produce the editorial calendar and supply editorial copy for the NFPA Journal Buyer’s Guide.

·        In production stages, determines size of issues. ·        Coordinates with the NFPA Web Master to supply editorial copy and ideas for the NFPA Journal web site.  



(B) Budgetary responsibilities.

·        Assists in preparing the annual budgets for editorial expenses.

·        Coordinates with the Art Director to monitor and control production costs within budget parameters.

·        Generates purchase orders for professional services as needed. 

 

(C) Management Responsibilities

·        Supervises the activities of the Periodicals Division. 

 

(D) Other duties

·        Performs other duties as assigned.



Requirements:



Requirements include a college degree in Journalism or English with 8-10 years' magazine experience as well as experience with online publications and new media; the ability to handle technical material accurately, to track production with the advertising department and printer, to interface with vendors and authors, and to adhere to strict deadlines.  Strong writing and editing skills necessary. Proficiency with a MAC is highly desirable.
