Emergency Dispatcher

TITLE:  Dispatcher  DATE:  September 9, 2008

 

REPORTS TO: Communications & Scheduling Supervisor  POSITION:  Hourly

 

Purpose/Scope:  The dispatcher monitors the location of emergency services personnel and vehicles as well as non-emergency and prescheduled transport ambulance personnel throughout their shift. The dispatcher decides the priority of the incident and the location of the closest and most suitable units for the call. When handling calls, dispatchers carefully question each caller to determine the type, seriousness, and location of the emergency.

 

Requirements: Education/Training: High school graduate with experience in the EMT/medical field and/or dispatch/scheduling experience a definite plus. 

 

Experience/Background/Knowledge: A demonstrated progressive track record in the EMT/medical field and/or dispatching/scheduling background a definite plus.  The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with other managers, staff and the public is vital.  Must be computer literate.  Must become adept with the American Ambulance Service dispatching system.

Appearance/Personality: Professional, upbeat, energetic, takes initiative and dependable; capable of remaining calm in stressful situations.

 

Special Requirements:  Willing to obtain or currently hold the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatching Certification and the CT. Telecommunicator Certificate.

Skills/Experience:Basic computer knowledge and skills;Excellent telephone etiquette;Excellent organizational skills;Prior dispatching, scheduling, EMT or medical experience desirable; Able to work in a fast-paced work environment; Available to work weekends and holidays;  Other duties as required.
