Job Description:Civil / Structural Engineer The National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF-PS) hasopenings for a registered Civil/Structural Engineer in the Facilities Engineering & Construction group. This group is composed of engineers, engineering associates, and mechanical technicians responsible for supporting NIF and Photon Science and Applications (PS&A) programs in the NIF Directorate. This engineer will prepare structural calculations, design criteria, design drawings, sketches and specifications for facility structural modifications and upgrades on numerous small projects and an occasional larger project. Some finite element analysis will be required, but not significant amounts. The work will include evaluations of platforms and new penetrations. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing project engineering for multidiscipline design projects as well as act as the lead engineer for small teams, and manage discipline budgets and schedules. Additionally, the engineer will provide engineering support during construction; respond to contractor’s requests for information, and review and check shop drawings in the resolution of field problems. The candidate will coordinate projects (structural discipline) and interact with LLNL personnel and A/E firms. Will report to the Group Leader for Facilities Engineering & Construction group within the NIF Projects organizationEssential Duties- Prepare structural calculations, design criteria, design drawings, sketches and specifications for facility structural modifications and upgrades.- Lead teams of structural designers and drafters. - Provide project engineering support on single or multi-disciplinary team design projects.- Produce detailed structural design and specification; evaluate methods being used; resolve technical problems; review and stamp drawings.- Provide day-to-day consultation and approval on technical matters related to structural engineering issues.- Provide engineering support during construction and respond to contractor’s requests (review and check shop drawings and solve field problems).- Work with Project Managers in establishing structural design scope and criteria for outside Architectural Engineering (A&E) Projects.- Review structural designs by consulting A/E firms for completeness and conformance to specified LLNL criteria and building codes. - Respond to all technical quality problems observed and bring to the attention of appropriate personnel; recommend the required corrective action.- Keep abreast of technological developments within assigned technical fields.Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities- B.S. Degree in Structural Engineering, B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering,with a minimum of eight (8) years of recent design experience.- Professional registration as a licensed Civil Engineer in California.- Experience communicating structural designs through hand-sketched plans and details.- Experience with the structural provisions of the latest building codes:UBC/IBC/FEMA 350.- Experience in the design and alteration of commercial, industrial and laboratory facilities.- Knowledgeable of construction processes and products.- Experience with proprietary structural software such as SAP2000, ETABS, STRUDL, and customized software such as Excel or MathCAD.- Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and changing priorities.- Demonstrated customer service skills.- Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary to make presentations to large groups.Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities- Familiar with Federal Building Codes DOE-STD-1020/etc.- Familiar with latest Life Safety Code, ADA/UFAS code, OSHA regulations.- Familiar with seismic retrofit codes FEMA 310, ASCE 31, FEMA 356, IEBC.- Experience with construction activities.- Familiar with CAD software such as AutoCAD 2000.- Familiar with graphics software such as 3D Studio, Photoshop, Power Point or related software.Job Experience:Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities- B.S.
