These responsibilities require the application of advanced concepts and principles of animal health, medicine, disease surveillance and control, surgery and advanced research technologies that contribute to innovative research programs using animal models of human disease. Serve as advisor to the Director, BioResources and to Wyeth Research site management on animal use issues, including Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee activities. Must ensure Wyeth sites maintain compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, and other applicable regulations and guidelines. Job ResponsibilitiesSupervise the veterinary technical staff and oversees the veterinary care program. Designs, prescribes, and implements elements of veterinary care programs including disease surveillance, diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention in a variety of laboratory animals.Ensures that BioResources staff are knowledgeable and skilled in current laboratory animal science techniques, trends, technology, and practices that are 1) applicable to their job responsibilities and 2) important to their career development.Establish procedures to provide optimal surgical models and technical support for the Wyeth Research staff at all Wyeth sites. Consult on surgical activities to include choice of anesthetic, analgesic or tranquilizer, pre- and post-surgical care, aseptic surgical technique, and choice of experimental surgical animal model.Assists Director to establish, monitor, direct and foster programs which meet or exceed current regulations regarding animal care and use, research protocol review, occupational health and safety, and generation of required reports, records and documents. Integrate animal welfare, laboratory animal science and research requirements using a science-based approach.Supports the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) by serving on the IACUC, at the pleasure of the Institutional Official, and or by providing training for BioResources and scientific staff.Assists Director and Manager with administrative activities of BioResources Department operations including expense approval; personnel assignments; staffing; the design, construction and allocation of animal related research facilities and participation in Departmental administrative and management meetings and programs. Provide fiscally sound management for department operations.Interface with or participate in outside organizations whose work impacts the on the care and use of laboratory animals in the pharmaceutical industry. Maintain active participation in the laboratory animal science community.Basic QualificationsRequires a veterinary medical degree from an AVMA accredited or approved veterinary medical college, or passage of the Foreign Veterinarian Equivalency Examination, board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and at least six years of experience in laboratory animal medicine.Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the United States of America.Completion of a formal laboratory animal residency training program or at least six years of experience within the field. Formal research training (e.g. fellowship, MS or PhD) is also desirable.At least one year of managerial or direct supervisory experience and a familiarity with the pharmaceutical environment is necessary. This experience may be obtained through a residency or post-doctoral program, or through previous employment. Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine is required.Relocation is available for this position.
