Youth Advisor - GED Plus Program, Young Adult Outreach Initiative

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The Young Adult Outreach Initiative is a positive intervention program for young adults, aged 16-24 (non-mandated), who are not in school and not employed and who live in the underserved southwest Bronx area surrounding New Settlement Apartments. This full-time Youth Advisor will support the annual cohort of approx. 50 young adults, aged 17-21, in our Pre-GED Plus educational program, through one-to-one case management, task-oriented advising, and group work. The advisor will work with the program director, the pre-GED teaching staff, and other youth advisors and interns to successfully implement the program as a whole. The goal of the Young Adult Outreach Initiative is to support approx. 260 youth participants in realizing specific outcome goals set by each, focused on resuming their education and gaining employment, and involving health, housing and juvenile/criminal justice issues. The program is designed to support disconnected young adults in our community who are at high risk of involvement in the juvenile or criminal justice system in getting back on track toward healthy adulthood.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EDUCATIONAL YOUTH ADVISOR

·                     Provide support for each youth to stay on track through the pre-GED program, by conducting regular one-to-one counseling sessions that support academic progress in the class and address any problems that may be impeding the youths’ progress.

·                     Conduct student intake and orientation of each cohort, and keep accurate records. Maintain pertinent information about each youth, in order to assess areas of need, set up goals (including attendance and retention in the class), and conduct regular follow-up.

·                     Coordinate and participate in on-going student conferences between advising staff and academic staff.

·                     Designing and leading workshops series on life-skills for each cohort of students.

·                     Participating in staff-development trainings provided through our networks and partnerships, and representing the program in settings with partners and colleagues, as appropriate.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & SKILLS REQUIRED: College degree and 2-3 years of experience working with older teens and young adults in a non-mandated program in a community-based setting. Counseling and case-management experience. Bilingual skills (Spanish-English) are a plus. Commitment to create a welcoming program environment and culture where youth are held accountable to meet high expectations and supported in doing so through positive, educational interventions and structured, holistic programming.  HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8a-4p, and some evenings

SALARY AND BENEFITS OFFERED: Salary range: Low-mid-$30,000s, negotiable, depending on experience.  New Settlement offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k).
