New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an innovative child welfare agency located in Midtown Manhattan, which provides services to medically fragile children and their families. NAC is currently seeking applicants for a Registered Dietitian JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Registered Dietitian, RD SUPERVISOR: Director of Nursing RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for age–related medically appropriate nutritional needs of medically fragile children and children with chronic medical conditions, their siblings and their caregivers across the continuum of care for the purposes of optimizing nutritional and physical health and minimizing nutrition-related morbidity. DUTIES: • Provide nutritional screening, assessment, education and counseling to children and family members in various settings (agency/in-home) ; • Develop nutritional care plans, and provide instruction to children and their families on dietary modifications to promote healthy eating habits within a multi-cultural context and in poor communities; • Provide instruction on grocery shopping and food preparation to children and caregivers where there are issues ranging from obesity to failure-to-thrive; • Be available to the Director of Recreation for consultation and guidance in safe food handling, sanitation, menu development and planning to ensure the safety of attendees during agency sponsored events; • Educate other healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, and social workers about food and nutrition issues • Plan, develop (curriculum), conduct and evaluate nutrition education, outreach and in-service programs with appropriate educational materials for various audiences; • Develop and oversee Food, Fun, Fitness Program in conjunction with NAC pediatrician; • Run group sessions; • Prepare information packets, flyers and other promotional materials; • Assist with the creation of outcome based measures to support grant proposals; • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to gain co-operation in following recommended dietary treatments/advice; • Attend and participate in team meetings, case conferences, etc.; • Write reports and case notes and maintain accurate records QUALIFICATIONS: • Licensed by New York State, Office of Professional Development. • Certified by the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietician (RD) • Master’s Degree in dietetics, nutrition or a related area required; • Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition (CSP) preferred • CDR Certificate of Training in Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management preferred • CDR Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management preferred • 3 Years minimum prior experience in healthcare dietary position • Prior experience working with medically fragile/special needs children highly preferred • Demonstrated project planning, implementation and evaluation experience • Experience with group facilitation • Familiarity with impact of cultural factors affecting food choice • Computer Literacy • Bilingual in Spanish a plus • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment SALARY: Commensurate with experience HOURS: NAC Diagnostic & Treatment Center hours are Monday-Friday 9am-7pm, and Saturday 9am-1pm. Candidate is expected to work 35 hours/week with some flexibility of evenings and Saturdays.
