Program Director, Transitional Living Community

The Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service is one of Brooklyn’s first and largest non-sectarian social services agencies.  The Brooklyn Bureau, which serves more than 13,000 individuals annually, is committed to a broad and diverse range of services including prevention of foster care placement and early childhood and after school education; and vocational training, job placement, and clinical services to adults with physical and developmental disabilities, and histories of mental illness.

 

The Brooklyn Bureau’s Transitional Living Community (TLC), a 40 bed section of the HELP Women’s Center in East New York, Brooklyn, was established in 1989. TLC provides homeless, low-income, mentally ill women with temporary shelter and assistance to secure permanent housing. Staff conduct comprehensive assessments to identify women with severe and persistent mental illness, many also having serious personal, social, medical and economic problems. A principle feature of the TLC program is the “milieu treatment” in which women are helped to practice the skills they will need to live successfully outside the shelter system, including pre-vocational preparation.

ResponsibilitiesLead staff to foster recovery, community integration, psychiatric stabilization and housing placement and retention for formerly homeless, mentally ill womenOversee and encourage creative programming that motivates staff and consumers toward placement goals of achieving a minimum of 56 housing placements per year and other program outcomesCoordinate and monitor activities including psychiatric;  casework;  house manager; group work;  and vocational/educational servicesLead regular staff meetings and encourage input for shared decision making and program improvementsPerform Quality Assurance functions via regular client satisfaction surveys and chart reviews; review compliance with DOHMH standards;  and ensure site visit preparedness; and prepare timely internal and external reportsHire staff; plan in-service and outside staff training; and supervise 3-4 direct reports Represent program and agency to HELP Women’s Center, Department of Homeless Services, and outside sourcesOversee program budget

Requirements: 

Master’s degree in Human Services and minimum 5 years administrative/supervisory experience with serious and persistent mental illness and/or homeless population.

Record keeping experience and excellent organizational, interpersonal, and team leadership skills.  Good writing and oral communication skills.

Fingerprinting and criminal background check required.
