Director, Strategic Planning

In addition, the director will lead the implementation and maintenance of the OSM as it relates to strategic project management, the organization-wide Balanced Scorecard, and environmental scanning.Strategic Planning: Lead, under direction of member leadership and staff leadership, all aspects of annual strategic planning activities, including but not limited to meetings with the Presidential Team, Executive Committee (EC), Board of Trustees (BOT), Senior Executive Team (SET), and Staff Leadership Team (SLT). Work with Presidential Team and Senior Executive Team to organize the one day EC Retreat (in Spring), and the three day BOT Planning Retreat (in Summer). This responsibility includes agenda setting in collaboration with member leadership and senior staff; framing of key issues; and developing meeting content and materials in collaboration with executive staff, key business line leaders, and member leadership. Work collaboratively with member and staff leadership to conduct analysis and develop key deliverables for all regular governance planning meetings with the aforementioned leadership groups and conduct other strategic/ key operational analysis for senior management. Serve as a liaison to all divisions and member committees regarding development of multi-year business planning, the development of strategic initiatives, completing a portfolio analysis of all ACC products and services offered/planned, and conducting market sizing and competitive analysis for key strategic activities of the ACC. Regularly present strategic information including strategic analysis of existing business, progress towards completion of strategic initiatives, and progress towards meeting mission and vision to the EC, SET, SLT, and staff. Update the College’s websites with latest content related to strategic planning activities and outcomes, for reference by Board members, staff, and the public. Work with the Chief Financial Officer/DVP of Finance and Strategy in any manner needed to facilitate the Strategic Planning process and align this with the budgeting process. Office of Strategy Management (OSM): Strategic Project Management Lead and ensure ongoing organizational discipline to conduct regular (quarterly) project management reports outlining progress on strategic initiatives. Serve as a champion to institute best project management practices and lead the quarterly evaluation and reporting process for strategic initiatives approved by the BOT to maximize the value delivered and to increase accountability within the College. Support the analysis of operational activities, such as resource allocations across the College for all initiatives/activities. Assist project manager(s) in organizing and managing project resources so that tasks are completed within the defined scope, quality, time, and cost constraints. Assist divisions in the development and refinement of comprehensive business plans (i.e., proposed initiatives) that support strategic priorities set by the Board of Trustees (BOT). Also, assist staff business leaders to develop and complete meaningful and measurable progress milestones indicative of success on strategic initiatives. Manage multiple projects simultaneously and autonomously, demonstrate a high degree of productivity, and adhere to deadlines. Coordinate staff to perform, and personally conduct, other research and project management tasks as needed. Environmental Scanning Supervise staff and personally conduct primary (i.e., interviews) and secondary research (i.e., internet and literature review) to contribute to the identification of key trends impacting the healthcare market and in particular cardiovascular medicine, from both domestic and international perspectives. · Identify strategic issues, market/customer insights, emerging technologies, competitive environment and other political and environmental drivers that may affect the College. · Establish and manager process to identify the key 40 healthcare trends from and solicit input from the Environmental Scanning Work Group (ESWG), EC, BOG, other leaders, members at large, staff and third party sources. · Organize and hold meetings (face-to-face and teleconferences) of ESWG to review and digest trends. · Summarize and prioritize key trends for Summer BOT meeting in the ESWG report and ensure ESWG leadership can effectively present key input to the annual and ongoing planning processes.· Develop a final deliverable each year with findings organized into three research topic areas, including: (1) The Healthcare Environment (Global and U.S. Perspectives); (2) The Mission of the ACC (Trends in Technology, Care Delivery, and Business/Economics as they relate to Quality, Education, and Advocacy) and; (3) Professional Association Trends. Balanced Scorecard · Design, coordinate, and manage to completion the annual process of refining and updating strategic measures and annual targets for the Balanced Scorecard. This includes coordination and management of the Balanced Scorecard Subgroup of the Board Executive Committee, the Senior Executive Team, and staff to lead the development, implementation, and successful maintenance of the ACC/ACCF Balanced Scorecard. · Champion the Balanced Scorecard across the organization.· Lead integration of the Balanced Scorecard with the College’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities.· Work collaboratively with Management Reporting staff to develop and prepare quarterly Balanced Scorecard reports.· Work with SET and SLT to evaluate execution of ACC strategic priorities.· Conduct quarterly update meetings with staff to widely communicate the College’s progress against strategic goals, and gather feedback for the ongoing improvement of this performance management tool.QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and understanding of strategic planning Minimum of 5-7 years experience in strategic planning with for-profit or non-profit sector Demonstrated ability to synthesize and effectively communicate large amounts of information Keen ability to communicate successfully at all levels of the organization from Board governance to executive management, to business line leadership, and rank-and-file staff. Strong “platform” skills in presenting complex strategic concepts and other aspects of business operations and strategic initiative performance. Ability to integrate financial, operational, and strategic business concepts to facilitate the organization’s development of thoughtful business strategies and effective disciplined execution. Advanced skills with software applications to support planning process (e.g., Powerpoint, Excel, and strategic reporting packages) Experience in health care desirable, but not required. BA required, MBA or similar advanced degree preferred. Ideally, experience and expertise in Balanced Scorecard strategy and performance management and experience in an organization with some level of formal Office of Strategy Management and/or strategic project management.
