Assistant Controller

First Place for Youth is an innovative and entrepreneurial nonprofit organization whose programs proactively challenge the trends among former foster youth by building self-esteem, self-reliance, and forging the skills necessary for successful independent living.  Focusing on housing stability, educational support, economic security, improved health, and connection to community, First Place programs are considered a national model for supporting youth in their transition out of foster care.  With these critical resources, youth are significantly more likely to overcome homelessness, poverty, low educational achievement, and poor health. 

 

The Assistant Controller works closely with the Director of Finance & Administration to oversee and maintain accounting systems, budgeting, and financial reporting.  This is an exciting opportunity for people looking to make a difference and ready to take the next step in their career.  The Associate Director of Finance oversees a staff of two bookkeepers and functions as the primary liaison with outside auditors.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  Oversee and coordinate accounting functions in accordance with GAAP. Provide day-to-day supervision of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. Maintain the general ledger and perform reconciliations. Ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting policies and procedures. Assist with the budgeting process and variance analysis. Analyze costs and provide input on appropriate budget adjustments. Verify cost allocations in accordance with company procedures. Maintain internal controls. Function as liaison with outside auditors and government agencies on contract issues. Prepare the Balance Sheet, Statement of Activities, and Cash Flow Statements. Oversee a staff of two bookkeepers and function as a first level resource in responding two questions and issues. Reports to and works closely with the Director of Finance and Administration.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  Knowledge of GAAP and FASB with clear understanding of accounting principles, government accounting policies, cost allocation procedures and nonprofit fund accounting. Ability to oversee and implement initiatives on a tactical level. Must be self-directed and demonstrate the ability to make decisions. Must be detail-oriented and highly organized. Ability to work with employees at all levels of the organization, including the Executive Director. Excellent organizational and leadership skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook) Strong knowledge of QuickBooks, MIP, and database applications. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. Minimum of 3-5 years experience. Non-profit experience.
