Underground Mining Project Manager
Position Purpose:
Support the strategic direction of the organization and the division. Demonstrate leadership, integrity, teamwork, quality and urgency in the performance of one’s functions and responsibilities to ensure the goals of customer satisfaction, market dominance and profitability are achieved.
Essential Functions:
Primary:
· Provide overall management support for a specific fleet of CAT and Getman underground mining machines by becoming embedded in the customer’s day-to-day maintenance and production operation for the purposes of:
· Maintaining agreed to fleet availability.
· Managing and containing warranty expenses and minimizing repair and maintenance cost per hour.
· Identifying machine maintenance and repair best practices and assisting in implementing and sustaining these practices.
· Developing and actively participating in a dynamic continuous improvement program.
· Maintaining agreed to fleet availability includes developing and utilizing an availability reporting system that accurately identifies hours when each machine is available and unavailable, and documentation of specific reasons for unavailability. Other related data and trend reports, such as MTTR, MTBS and unscheduled and scheduled repairs, are expected to be maintained and routinely analyzed by the Underground Mining Project Manager (UMPM). The UMPM is responsible for recognizing negative trends and implementing timely corrective action.
· Managing and containing warranty expenses and minimizing repair and maintenance cost per hour includes answering technical requests and assisting in the resolution of critical product problems through diagnosis, personal knowledge and expertise, manufacturing contacts and engineering data. With assistance from Technical Services, the UMPM is responsible for documenting and summarizing major product problems for presentation to appropriate audiences (customer, Cashman and/or Caterpillar), product problem containment, and final resolution. The UMPM is responsible for communicating service technician manpower needs to the appropriate Cashman Equipment contact. The UMPM is the spokesperson for summarizing the overall product health of the fleet and identifying and communicating the top product problem issues.
· Identifying machine maintenance and repair best practices and assisting in implementing and sustaining these practices includes recognizing, documenting and reporting product or maintenance issues that significantly effect operations and/or production that may include operation and production issues. The UMPM will work closely with Caterpillar Underground Mining representatives to identify best practices at various mine sites and communicating and implementing these best practices at the customer’s site.
· Developing and actively participating in a dynamic continuous improvement program includes acting as the focal point in development and documentation of Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) and insuring that best practices are sustained and continuously reviewed, updated and improved. The UMPM is responsible for recognizing and recommending the formation of focus teams consisting of appropriate team members from the customer, Cashman and Caterpillar to determine specific problem root causes implement appropriate corrective action and insure corrective action is sustained.
The UMPM may also be responsible to identify areas where training could improve overall fleet availability or maintenance or production operations.
Secondary:
· Assist with identifying and developing meaningful benchmark measurements that can be used to maximize equipment productivity and uptime, minimize maintenance and repair cost and monitor financial results against a prescribed budget.
· Identify operational issues that could benefit from a continuous improvement team review. Influence others to develop these areas into Continuous Improvement projects. Participate on appropriate teams.
· Gather, assemble, summarize and distribute all component life data (including using MCTS). Example: component life hours, part causing failure information.
· Direct, coordinate, perform and report on test iron projects, failure analysis, reusability guidelines and parts salvage and development.
· Investigate and report on product accidents to Cashman and Caterpillar.
· Assess and provide input to service management on service equipment, tooling, procedural, and technician training needs.
· Adhere to company policies, procedures and safety regulations. Use all safety equipment as necessary. Report any unsafe acts or conditions.
Performance Standards:
· When actual fleet availability is equal to or greater than the predetermined fleet availability goal.
· When warranty expenses have been managed and contained and repair and maintenance cost per hour has been minimized compared to predetermined goals.
· When machine maintenance and repair best practices have been identified and these practices have been implemented and are being sustained.
· When the UMPM is actively participating in a dynamic continuous improvement program.
· When the UMPM is submitting accurate, timely and complete product problem reports.
· When the UMPM is effectively participating as part of the customer team, assisting where appropriate and requesting assistance when needed.
· When the UMPM has achieved delivery of customer focused, high quality, cost effective service.
· When customer recognizes the value in the Project Manager position and when the cost avoidance achieved from the service significantly exceeds the cost for the service.
· When the UMPM adheres to company policies, procedures and practices.
Position Specifications:
Education:
· High School diploma, GED or trade school equivalent, or previous project management experience.
· Ability to read and understand materials commonly used in the job function.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills.
· Courses in basic engineering, algebra, trigonometry, and technical writing/presentations.
Technical Training:
· Product specific hydraulics, electronics, power transmission, pneumatics, engines, air conditioning, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and failure analysis application.
· Working knowledge and, preferably, previous experience supporting underground or surface mining equipment.
· General technical areas of applied physics, mechanical drawing, metal component fabrication and structure design, and machining processes.
· Proficient computer technology skills, including ability to utilize company authorized software and able to effectively use and navigate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access.
Experience:
· Minimum of five (5) years of heavy equipment technician experience or equivalent experience and demonstrated knowledge.
Work Environment:
· Outside environment. Frequent underground mining exposure (60%). Office environment (at customer mine site or at Cashman Equipment) (40%).
· Must be able to go in an underground mine and work in an underground mining environment for extended periods (8-10 hours per day, occasionally for successive days).
· Field environment with exposure to adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, dirt and noise.
· Valid Nevada Drivers License with an acceptable driving record.
· Frequent travel and periodic overnight stays.
Physical / Mental Abilities:
· Professional attitude and appearance consistent with position and responsibilities.
· Self-motivated and detail oriented; work with minimum supervision.
· Stand/walk 5-6 hours a day, and/or sit 4-5 hours a day.
· Occasionally lift 50 lbs.
· Must use hands for repetitive simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation.
· Must be able to occasionally bend, squat and climb, including the ability to ascend and descend ladders.
