Division: Cardiovascular Division (CVD) Location: Little Canada, MN 55117 Status: Full Time, Employee Job Category: Engineering Career Level:Experienced (Non-Manager) Company:St. Jude Medical EH&S Engineer II Primary Objective of Position:Develop, implement, and monitor occupational safety and environmental compliance programs to ensure that St. Jude Medical maintains a safe and healthful operation which meets company objectives and regulatory requirements. Major areas of accountability:Monitors the workplace environment by analyzing work processes, materials, equipment and the work habits of employees and ensures appropriate corrective action is taken where hazards exist. Develops and oversees EHS training programs for employees in areas such as employee-right-to-know, hazardous material handling, laser safety, emergency response, industrial hygiene, and life safety.Plans and schedules work to meet deadlines established by others to ensure the completion of several related tasks. Uses judgment in data analysis to develop and design solutions to difficult health and safety problems.Performs traditional EHS duties such as job safety analyses, health and safety training, workplace incident investigations, workplace safety inspections and internal audits.Serves as a resource to division management and EHS staff on matters relating to occupational health and safety, environmental compliance, fire protection and loss prevention.Serves as the site Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and Laser Safety Officer (LSO).Supports the EHS Manager in the management of all hazardous material and hazardous waste activities including the collection, transportation and disposal of all hazardous waste in compliance with all applicable regulations.Serves as an Incident Commander for the facilities emergency response team, provides necessary training and support.Develops, maintains and provides employee training regarding the sites Emergency Response Procedures, and conducts periodic drills to ensure preparedness for potential emergencies. Supports the EHS Manager in the maintenance of the facility’s Emergency Response and Fire Plans. On call for EHS emergencies.Reviews new hazardous materials and checks incoming material for MSDS’s, unique usage and storage characteristics. Works with end user to ensure proper usage and disposal. Provides guidance as necessary.Supports the EHS Manager in the development of ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 procedures and provides associated training and auditing as directed.Supports the EHS Manager in the development and maintenance of metrics associated with environmental health and safety performance related to ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 requirements.Supports the EHS Manager in conducting reviews for facility modification, new product development, product modification and new equipment/machinery as required.Supports the EHS Manager through preparation of reports, submission of permit applications and licensure activities related to site operational activities.(includes but is not necessarily limited to air permits, industrial wastewater permits, storm-water permits, hazardous waste licenses etc.)Coordinates industrial wastewater sampling activities associated with required permitting.Serves as the company liaison with OSHA, fire departments and local, state and federal environmental regulatory agencies.Works under very general direction from the EHS Manager, and independently determines general approach and specific solution to difficult problems. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting stated objectives. Selects and applies professional health and safety principles, theories and concepts and uses independent judgment to develop and design imaginative, thorough and practical solutions to difficult health and safety issues. Coordinates the monitoring for employee exposure to chemical and other toxic substances, including performing Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling and supporting the activities of contract Industrial Hygienists, chemical spill remediation specialists, and safety consultants as required. Assists in conducting ergonomic risk assessments and making appropriate corrective action recommendations. Selects, trains and monitors the work of all volunteer employee Safety Coordinators and Chemical Handlers. Serves as the technical resource to the various Safety Committees.Education and/or Experience: B.S. Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field. Chemistry experience preferred.* Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in the Health and Safety field with both hands on and program management experience.Ability to navigate and interpret OSHA regs, fire codes and applicable regulations.• Expected to function with little direction and be able to independently drive complex projects to completion.• Mastered the technical skills necessary to perform traditional EHS duties but at a higher more independent level.• Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.
