More information can be found at www.covidien.com OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES OF COMPONENT/TEST ENGINEER•Works closely with R&D, Engineering, and Purchasing to assess component obsolescence risks, and proactively works with vendors to identify and implement appropriate alternatives.•Possesses the ability to multi-task and work under pressure when given short notice of material outages and associated manufacturing disruption.•Focuses on reducing cost by reviewing circuit and mechanical designs and recommending suitable alternatives. Provides leadership and takes initiative in identifying and pursuing other cost reduction opportunities.•Provides leadership in developing consistent standards for component management among all R&D and Operations Engineering groups.•Works in Product Lifecycle Management system (Agile) to enter and maintain component data and manufacturer information, updates approved vendor lists, reviews and approves Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).•Provides Design for Manufacturability guidance to R&D Engineering regarding part selection, design concepts, and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques.•Develops and performs tests to validate alternate devices. •Creates appropriate documentation for engineering change orders in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). •Understands product designs and focuses on ways to improve manufacturing processes and other cost reduction opportunities.•Gathers and analyzes manufacturing data and works closely with Quality organization to define appropriate process changes.•Part of a cross-functional operations team in implementing RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) programs within the Company.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES•Prepares cost and time estimates for engineering and project schedules.•Provides written reports and engineering documentation as necessary.•Assures compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures and policies.•Participates in team decision making.•Demonstrates skill in the use and care of all tools and equipment.•Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices and all other applicable standards.•Stays informed about applicable new rules, regulations, and standards.•Writes manufacturing process protocols for equipment validation.•Prepares monthly progress reports on projects.•Develops and writes specifications for components/systems, product, processes, and packaging/labeling.•Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work area.•Follows all safety procedures.Requirements: EDUCATION•Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field.•Preferred: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field.EXPERIENCE•7+ years experience in component engineering practice including project leadership responsibility.•7+ years experience in manufacturing engineering processes, engineering change management, product lifecycle systems, and PCBA design for manufacturabilityKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES•Possesses good organization and technical communication skills to effectively monitor and convey component end-of-life (EOL) notifications and part change notifications (PCN’s) to Purchasing and Engineering. •Has intimate knowledge of electronic components and their applications to quickly evaluate the severity of EOL’s and PCN’s, and to evaluate potential alternates. Also is familiar with circuit design principles and board layout guidelines.•Has strong electronic circuit analysis skills to evaluate alternate part selection•Builds effective teams with Purchasing, Quality, and Engineering to find alternates for parts to maintain quality, strengthen the supply chain, and reduce costs. •Has strong knowledge of electronic component industry trends, regulatory agencies, and history. •In-depth knowledge and experience in DFM (Design for Manufacturability) principles as they apply to PCBA manufacture.•Competence in dealing with multiple organizations and disciplines, leading projects, directing meetings, making assignments, documenting and tracking action plans.DISCLAIMER:The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
