As the Metallurgist at our Council Bluffs Plant, you must function well with limited supervision. Your role is essential to maintaining Griffin Pipe'shigh standard of quality. You will evaluate and determine the melting, alloying casting and annealing materials and methods required to produce quality ductile iron pressure pipe. Through your technical support to Hot Metal Operations, your efforts will directly affect the increase of production, improvement of quality and reduction of costs.
Responsibilities:
Evaluates the various raw materials available for melting and casting and determines which combination of raw materials is to be used in Hot Metal production.Coordinates the flow of raw materials with Melting and Purchasing to ensure sufficient quantities are available to support the operations.Monitors the receiving and inspection of raw charge materials to ensure compliance with specifications and required analysis.Monitors ongoing analysis of iron and adjusts the Cupola Charge and/or Ladle additions to reduce scrap and reanneals. Directs the operation of the chemistry lab to assure that procedures are established and followed so that the continuous testing of molten iron is accurate, timely and communicated in a manner that ensures the production of pipe that meet the customer’s specifications.Directs the operation of the Annealing Oven to ensure that operating procedures are established and followed to produce pipe that meet the customer’s specifications.Works with the Quality Department to establish and maintain a line of communications that ensure the production of pipe meet the customer’s specifications.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering required.Minimum one to three (1-3) years of experience in heavy industry - preferably foundry or steel industry. Experience with ductile iron and centrifugal casting preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to interpret and present technical data.Outstanding leadership qualities and ability to supervise a unionized workforce.
