Fabrication Operator
PURPOSE: Accomplishes various production assembly functions that vary in complexity. Assembles Helmet products or sub-assemblies according to verbal or written instructions, or by following drawings or diagrams. Operates hand tools, band saw, drill press, routers, belt sanders or other production equipment. Removes excess flashing from composite parts. Prepares molded composite surfaces for finishing using various filler materials, resins and other production equipment. Assembles various Life Support Helmet assemblies and sub-assemblies. Performs tasks associated with rework or repair of Helmet assemblies and sub-assemblies including taking apart and reassembling components after repairing or replacing parts. Inspects equipment using defined specifications to determine acceptance. May also modify or repair existing tools and molds. Performs complex tool making procedures requiring fitting and assembling parts, and making adjustments to meet requirements. Builds, restores, alters and services a variety of molds used for rubber or composite molding. Molds various composite shapes using production or prototype tooling and equipment according to verbal or written instructions, or by following drawings diagrams. Knowledge working with leather, sorting, cutting and sewing by hand per instructions. EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent. Vocational training or apprenticeship plus relevant experience, or equivalent. EXPERIENCE: 1 - 2 years experience in a production environment or equivalent. 6 months - 1 year relevant tooling and mold making experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Analytical/Problem solving skills. Production Tooling, Mold, Fixturing and Jig fabrication. Production Processes (Composite Molding, Surface Preparation, Painting, Assembly, etc.). Experience with sewing leather by hand. Machining processes (milling, drilling, grinding, cutting, etc.). Composite molding processes (Wet lay-up, pre-preg, resin, etc). Clay molding processes. Mechanical Measurement and Instrumentation skills. Oral and written Communication skills. Ability to handle multiple programs and tasks simultaneously and efficiently. Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have a positive professional demeanor. Excellent time management skills, and ability to pay attention to detail. Blueprint reading skills. Professionalism and ability to interface effectively with all levels of personnel. Ability to work in a comprehensive team environment. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs repair, rebuilding or overhaul work of production tooling, molds, etc. from blueprints or written or verbal instructions. Starts up and shuts down equipment in line with company safety procedures for equipment under power and OSHA requirements. Fabricates molds, prototype components, production tooling/fixturing from blueprints, drawings, sketches or written or verbal instructions. Identifies sub assemblies per drawings. Assembles or reworks sub assemblies and components in accordance with written or verbal instruction. Maintains production equipment through proper cleaning and care. Ensures appearance and condition standards for quality are met for end product as well as all subassemblies and components. Uses assembly fixtures, hand tools, gauges, measuring devices, and Test equipment. Builds Helmet systems and other complex sub assemblies. Uses Production fixturing, band saws, routers, belt sanders, drill motors, miniature sanders to trim and clean excess flashing from composite products. Prepares composite surfaces for finishing using various production fixturing, filler materials and resins. Ensures that product meets applicable specifications through measurement, visual inspections and other verifications. Lays out composite material and cuts out various shapes using predetermined pattern templates. Provides training to Manufacturing Personnel as needed.
