Engineer, Packaging

Responsible for performing activities that support the Packaging Engineering group. Responsible for design and implementation of packaging solutions for products in the storage and organization market, both in the retail and industrial channels. Packages will be transported by multiple modes of transport including ocean, rail, air, and over-the-road, domestically as well as internationally. Scope & Responsibilities:

• Design, Sample and implement packaging solutions for components and finished goods developed within the Product Development organization. Ensure that packages meet performance, aesthetic and cost expectations.

• Review domestic and international supplier packaging designs for components and finished goods and work with supplier to improve packaging. Determine packaging performance expectations to be added to the supplier RFQ process.

• Review existing package designs and recommend cost reduction solutions.

• Provide technical support and training to Plant Engineering to ensure the standardization of packaging components for line extensions.

• Provide packaging recommendations and cost estimates for new products and line extensions that meet project deadlines.

• Produce/assemble component and finished goods packaging and merchandising samples for packaging engineering, marketing and sales.

• Establish and update packaging specifications - Script BOM’s for drafting to complete

• Establish performance test and validation criteria for package designs - Work with designers and drafters (internal/external) in packaging design activities & assignments.

• Work with Procurement to assess packaging sourcing opportunities and cost optimization

• Monitor, evaluate and provide recommendations associated with packaging standards & regulations.

• Determine project risk and communicate key issues with stakeholders.

• Schedule work to meet completion dates and technical specifications - Utilize appropriate computer software (MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS Projects, and PowerPoint) Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering or equivalent packaging engineering experience considered

• Minimum of 3-5 years of packaging design (in both retail packaging and large item industrial packaging) and implementation experience.

• Working knowledge of packaging performance testing (ISTA, ASTM, shock & vibration, compression)

• Proficient in AutoCAD (1,500+ hours desired), working knowledge of 2D/3D modeling tools (Pro-E, Solid Works) and TOPS

• Ability to manage multiple projects with hundreds of details and deliver solutions to agreed upon timelines

• Must be result oriented, energetic, proactive, self-starter and a team player • Must have a high tolerance to ambiguity

• Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate to all levels within an organization.

• Ability to travel approximately once a month (duration of 1 week).
