PPG Industries, an $11 billion leading producer of coatings, glass, chemicals, and fiberglass is seeking talented people for a Composite Technologist position within the Fiber Glass Science & Technology center at the Shelby, NC facility.

The Shelby Fiber Glass Science & Technology Center is located within an hour of downtown Charlotte, NC. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Cleveland County is steeped with heritage, beautiful landscapes, comfortable climates, a stable economy, and friendly people. The role of the Composites Technologist is to support and further the thermoplastics group and specifically the Long Fiber Thermoplastics (LFT) projects. This resource is needed to support the LFT center for excellence and manage the day to day technical activity in compounding, injection molding and Long Fiber Thermoplastics processing. The Major function will be to support the Thermoplastics development team and the LFT S&T scientist in various studies on LFT and Thermoplastic compounds. The incumbent has to be knowledgeable in twin screw compounding technologies, Granulate Long Fiber Thermoplastics processing and Direct Granulate Long Fiber Thermoplastic processing. The incumbent will need to be familiar with injection molding techniques and be mechanically adept at maintaining, moving and replacing components on all the thermoplastics processes. A general understanding of composites and processes is required as well as a general understanding of polymer processes and thermoplastics properties. A general understanding of statistics and design of experiments is required. The incumbent has to follow all the technical terminology and laboratory procedures in order to process and monitor projects and where needed, develop new procedures. The individual must exhibit strong teamwork skills and will work with a variety of people in the organization as well as outside of PPG, and have excellent communication skills both orally and in writing. Incumbent may be called upon to travel and may be involved in technology transfer and training at customers. Successful candidate must have a minimum of 5 years work experience in the composites industry. Preferably with hands on experience with composite processing especially resin infusion. Additionally, experience in the areas of laminate design and structural analysis, or experience with ballistic testing and design of composites to optimize ballistic performance are preferred. Other skills that are key preference areas include experience with mechanical property testing of composite materials; ability to correlate predictive lab material testing with composite performance; fatigue testing of composites and analysis of fatigue data; and failure analysis of composites. B.S. degree in Chemistry or Engineering discipline with 0-2 years experience, or an Associates Degree with multiple years of experience in a lab environment, or the equivalent background and technical know-how; good communications skills.
