JOB TITLE: AC/DC Drive Control Engineer
DEPARTMENT: Mining Machinery Engineering
REPORTS TO: Engineering Manager of Development and Analysis
MAJOR PURPOSE OF POSITION
Responsible to the Engineering Manager of Development and Analysis for leading projects focused in drive system development and application activities relating to Bucyrus International's product line.
JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Analyze system architecture of vendor supplied motor drive products and modify existing as well as develop new regulator application files across all product lines.
2. Initiate efforts to detect, solve, and preclude the recurrence of design and/or vendor problems for drive system hardware and software.
3. Investigate and test control algorithms to ensure optimal dynamic operation of each product motion. Write evaluation reports for supplier developed/provided circuitry to identify design strengths and weaknesses.
Propose and evaluate the impact of design improvements to correct the weaknesses.
4. Create mathematical models of drive products and electrical power systems to verify a correlation with measured data using simulation tools such as Matlab/Simulink, Vissim, or similar dynamic modeling software.
5. Implement stability analysis methods used to analyze closed loop systems such as PID, PDF, Lead/lag etc, and associated analog and digital filtering techniques.
6. Manage efforts to create a library of regulator drive software and implement standardization methodologies to ensure commonality and portability across all product lines.
7. Research new technologies and control topologies associated with the dynamic control of high horsepower drive systems. Must be able to prepare informative and concise presentations for management review.
8. Support field verification of performance levels for new product developments. Ensure operating characteristics meet expectations and formulate hardware/software resolutions to address problems or issues as they arise.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Graduate of an accredited engineering school with additional course work in discrete time systems and control theory or job knowledge gained through experience as defined in "Type and Length of Experience" for this position. MSEE preferred.
TYPE AND LENGTH OF EXPERIENCE
At least two years experience in product related analysis, design, test involvement, as well as field experience with AC/DC drive systems. Formal AC/DC drives development and application experience is required. A recent Graduate a Masters Science Electrical Engineering program is acceptable. Desired skills include power systems analysis through either academic course work job experience.
