Senior Paralegal

POET, the largest ethanol producer in the world according to the Renewable Fuels Association, is an established leader in the biorefining industry through project development, design and construction, research and development, plant management, and marketing. The 20-year old company currently operates 24 production facilities in the United States with four more in construction or under development. The company produces and markets more than 1.4 billion gallons of ethanol annually.

THIS POSITION IS BASED IN OUR SIOUX FALLS, SD CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

The Senior Paralegal provides critical support in facilitating the General Counsel's oversight of outside counsel and management of the legal team.

This position is specifically responsible for, and fundamentally involved in:Drafting policies, engagement letters, billing guidelines, and legal matter budgets for outside counsel.Communicating directly with outside counsel to ensure efficient utilization of legal resources and compliance with engagement and billing guidelines.Coordinating workflow for the legal team by overseeing the timely and accurate addition of information to project and action lists and ensuring the appropriate use of online collaboratino and document creation between in-house and outside counsel.Developing and implementing performance metrics for in-house and outside attorneys and creating and analyzing trend reports using the matter management and e-billing system.Supervising the utilization of the internal matter management database by monitoring for the consistent and accurate entry of data by in-house and outside counsel.Developing and implementing document and records retention policies.Implementing web-based ethics, governance, and preventative law training sessions for team members.Providing support to the Corporate secretary, including drafting and maintaining appropriate corporate minutes and other corporate documents.Assisting the General Counsel and other legal team members on various projects as assigned.

Successful candidate must meet the following requirements:Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and operate in a fast-paced environment.Ability to take direction, establish priorities, and work independently.Deomonstrate discretion and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality while dealing with almost exclusively sensitive matters.Assertive, self-motivated, and results-oriented.Passionate about the biofuels industry and being involved in a contantly evolving, mission-driven business.Superior oral and written communication skills.A critical thinker who can apply their intellect and creativity to identify problems and provide creative solutions.

Background Required:A minimum of 10, but preferably 15-20 years paralegal experience in a law firm or in-house setting.Ability to draft and review corporate documents, such as resolutions, consents, articles of organization, and bylaws.Excellent skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.Skilled researcher, with experience conducting online research and using WestLaw.Experience with database management and case or matter management software.Bachelor's Degree from a reputable college or university with a paralegal certificate from an ABA approved program; will consider equivalent experience.
