Systems Engineer

The Time Warner Cable Corporate office currently seeks an Technology Engineer for our Systems Engineering Department. Below please find a brief description of the essential duties and responsibilities required to function successfully in this position.


Essential Job Functions:
This position is for a technology engineer within Time Warner Cable’s Systems Engineering Applications group. This group is responsible for the design and engineering of our ISP services (Email, VoiceMail & DNS), as well as the network load balancing for all applications that power Time Warner Cable’s high speed data and voice services. This position is specifically aimed at hiring an engineer to work our messaging systems.
Candidates will be part of the team responsible for the designing and updating to the software application, hardware, or architecture as necessary to ensure that the technical solution is reliable and sufficiently scaled to meet increased subscriber usage and growth. Candidate must be able to actively participate in the development of the messaging architecture within Time Warner Cable, identifying areas of concern and driving solutions from concept to final implementation.
Successful candidates will be responsible for the development of documentation required to implement their designs, including testing, deployment, and operations. This documentation will cover both the processes required, as well as what is required to maintain the system once operational.
Other duties include ongoing engineering of assigned technology to ensure that the service is meeting capacity and availability requirements.

Systems engineer is responsible for the architecture and design of the systems that power Time Warner Cable’s high speed data and voice services. As such, the primary job functions can be divided into 4 major categories: Working with business owners to identify new features and requirements; Lab testing of new products; Writing documentation for the installation and deployment of new products and software revisions; acting as the subject matter expert for a given topic within Time Warner Cable. The exact ratio of work in these 4 areas will vary, depending on the project and point in time during the project life cycle.


Job Requirements:
A successful applicant must be able to demonstrate ability to ensure that technical solutions are architected, implemented, and operated in a reliable and cost-effective manner. Consistent with a 24 X 7 Operations environment, this position needs to be available via cell phone to respond to escalated issues. Experience with networks, systems and services designed to support multi-million customers is highly desired.
This position requires technical expertise in the following areas: Understanding of messaging platforms, and their design; Implementation of standard and advanced messaging systems, encompassing standard e-mail as well as other messaging platforms such as voicemail and SIP messages; Familiarity with standard ISP services (Email, DNS, NNTP, etc), as well as the underlying internet RFCs; Familiarity with the tasks involved in the day-to-day operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of large-ISP class services.
Understanding of the following technologies and processes:
- Experience with the design and engineering of ISP services
- The physical and logical elements, interfaces, and configurations of standard server hardware and Unix operating systems.
- Experience with the OpenWave MX mail platform a plus.
- Experience with VoIP voicemail platforms a plus.
- Experience working at a cable high speed data service a plus.
- Experience with the design and engineering of layer-4 load balancing switches a plus.
- Experience with the design and engineering of storage area networks (SANs) a plus.


Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from four-year college or university; or equivalent training, education and experience.
