Senior Staff Accountant

HCC Insurance is an international insurance company and a leading specialty insurance group with offices across the United States and in Bermuda, Spain, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.  HCC Service Company, is seeking an entry level Staff Accountant for its Corporate Accounting department at our Northwest Houston office.  HCC Insurance operations consist of underwriting agencies; intermediaries; and life, property and casualty insurance companies which are rated AA (Very Strong) by Standard & Poor’s, AA (Very Strong) by Fitch Ratings and A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best Company.  HCC Insurance specializes in diversified financial products; group life, accident & health; general aviation; property; marine and energy; and other specialty insurance. 

 

Eligible candidates will have a four year degree in Accounting.  Conduct monthly general ledger maintenance, consolidations and closings along with financial statement review and preparation of select financial reports for executive management.  Provide assistance for our subsidiaries and service departments for the monthly close process including management reporting, consolidations and reconciliations along with budget planning.

 

Requirements: 

· Bachelor degree in Accounting

· Minimum of 4 years of prior accounting experience, preferably in a corporate environment

· Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make astute recommendations

· Sound numeric skills-detailed and accurate

· Professional communication skills both written and oral  

· Understanding of general business and accounting practices

· Good organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure

· Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize

· Proficient using MS Office Package (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint)

· Ability to understand and apply accounting concepts and internal policies and procedures to solve a variety of problems.

· Flexibility to work overtime when needed.

 

Responsibilities:

· Prepare journal entries and analyze financial information to maintain general ledgers in accordance with GAAP.

· Review ledgers and conduct the monthly financial close and consolidation process.

· Analyze financial data; prepare monthly financial reports with variance analysis for management.

· Prepare monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts, research, document, access risk  and clear aged items for assigned companies

· Prepare documentation to support monthly financial statements in compliance w/ Sarbanes Oxley and internal policies. 

· Develop new reports as required for the maintenance of the general ledgers.

· Develop budget and forecasting data for assigned general ledgers and coordinate with service company department leads during the budget and forecasting cycles, develop trend analysis.

· Prepare and analyze budget to actual variance financial reports.

· Assist as needed in the preparation of annual 10-K and quarterly 10-Q filings required by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

· Interface with our subsidiaries’ accounting personnel to compile information for consolidated reporting (monthly close, equity in earnings entries, consolidation accounting, and budget, forecast).
