Manager, Competitive Intelligence (CI)

 

The Manager of Competitive Intelligence (CI) is responsible for the creation of a competitive intelligence function.  As part of the Marketing team, the Manager will actively collaborate with market segment managers, marketing lead team, sales and account management, informatics, and other internal/external stakeholders as needed to develop a robust CI application.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Act as a CI and knowledge specialist aligned with multiple departments, teams and management.Develop pre-defined standards to ensure legal and ethical approaches to CI, protecting company interests and confidentiality.Develop and implement CI best practices including, but not limited to, developing and maintaining appropriate access to electronic databases, eBooks, eJournals, Competitive Alerts, and other sources of electronic knowledge and value.  Build and maintain competitor landscapes to include:All business segments – individual under 65, Medicare, small group, large group and ancillaryTop selling products in Arizona marketPricing methodologies & positionUnderwriting methodologiesMarketing & advertising strategiesTo support sales national account goals, document strategies adopted by our principle competitors in other states that are intended to be rolled out nationally.Review SEC filings, Department of Insurance (DOI), selected public sector proposals and other financial data of competitorsCompile and coordinate dissemination of provider reimbursement methodologies, including hospital, physician and ancillary providers within the BCBSAZ network.  Maintain database of BCBSAZ and competitor data as available.  Track broker commission methods and positionDocument how variable product distribution channels rank us versus competitors (e.g. brokers, group benefit administrators); Track how key stakeholders rank BCBSAZ versus competitors – members, business owners/decision makers and providers. Collaborate with other members of the organization and the BCBS Association member plans in gathering primary intelligence and incorporate this knowledge into the CI database.  Interactions with brokers/benefit administrators that give us competitive insight must be included as a source of CI.Strong working knowledge of tools and techniques for gathering and disseminating competitive intelligence information and appropriate application to specific assignments necessary.  Make recommendations for technical applications suitable to maintain a user-friendly, actionable, and trackable CI database.  Produce actionable CI by developing a systematic process that discerns and transforms disparate data sources into strategic knowledge.

 

 

WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

 

Routinely interface with all BCBS of Arizona department and management.

External contact includes vendors, brokers, contracting organizations, and enrolled or potential customers.

 

Education and Experience – College degree in business, marketing, economics, research or related field plus 5-10 years working experience specifically in the development and management of the CI function. Recent experience in the health insurance industry is a plus.  Advanced degree preferred.  Collaborative style is necessary in order to support multiple departments and projects.  Broad knowledge and experience with the information technology used for searching, developing and maintaining a CI function is necessary.
