Claim Counsel - Vendor Relations

The incumbent will operate as part of a team with group experience in coverage issues, and litigation management, and defense counsel management techniques. Claims counsel will need technical knowledge and experience in one or more of the above described disciplines and be able to learn and collaborate with team members in all of these areas. Typical job functions include:  responsibility for managing the approved panel of defense counsel; screening and selection of defense counsel for the approved defense counsel panel; review ongoing defense counsel needs. 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Serve as internal general resource on coverage, litigation management issues.

2. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with both SIC and external personnel, encouraging candid, effective communications dedicated to identification and resolution of current or potential issues of concern.

3. Prepare and deliver training to SIC personnel on select legal management subjects.

4. Assist in the development and implementation of methodologies to ensure consistency in the handling of issues relating to effective litigation management (e.g. selection and retention of defense counsel, litigation guidelines, fee audit programs, etc.).

5. Assist in the development of processes for the gathering and analysis of statistical and other data impacting claims results related to legal management.



JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Knowledge:Law degree  preferred not required.

 

Experience:Proven knowledge of issues and legal developments in one or more of the disciplines described in the position summary through at least five years of active legal practice, or experience within an insurance company environment. Past involvement in training activities is also preferable.

 

Skills:Knowledge of law and principles relating to insurance contracts coverage issues,  litigation management issues. The claims counsel must have a comprehensive understanding of litigation techniques and strategies for resolution of disputes in these disciplines. Also must skills appropriate for preparing and delivering training to claims personnel.
