VP Specialty Markets - Human Services
Manage specialty lines’ product development, business development, and underwriting functions for assigned specialty lines’ market segment. Responsible for financial outcomes of assigned segment. Manage and coordinate related functions to achieve overall segment financial and process goals. Coordinate related activities with other home office departments such that market segment practices, objectives, and outcomes will be congruent with overall corporate strategies.Position has a level of underwriting authority analogous to that of a VP of regional underwriting. Responsible for assuring business development and underwriting staff are recruited, trained, and developed to effectively execute their responsibilities in accordance with their business objectives and grants of authority. Perform duties in accordance with company policies and procedures with significant latitude for independent action and initiative.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES1. Develop short and long range strategies for assigned market segment ensuring consistency and integration with overall Harleysville corporate strategy.2. Manage the operation to ensure proper risk selection, pricing, business development, expense control, and procedures in order to achieve loss ratio, production, pricing, expense, productivity, and service goals.3. Manage activities of business development, underwriting and other support staff. Manage unit operations including directing, controlling, staffing, salary administration, career development, and budgeting.4. Review, evaluate, and interpret statistical information supplied by home office, regulatory agencies, and service organizations such as loss ratio, pricing, and production. Implement new procedures as necessary. 5. Formulate recommendations to home office management on matters exceeding personal authority.6. Maintain positive relationships with agents. Visit agencies on a regular basis and make new agency appointments which may advance the progress of the assigned segment.7. Provide technical and management support to segment underwriters on complex files or procedural issues.8. Interpret and distribute relevant insurance publications and coverage information to maintain currency in insurance industry trends.9. Monitor underwriting process and adherence to company policies and procedures through self audit of underwriting, premium audit, and loss control files.10. Monitor business development process and procedures through detailed sales planning and follow through.11. Assure competitive analysis is current and incorporate such analysis in product rate reviews and recommendations for product development or upgrades.12. Conduct rate and coverage reviews. Make recommendations to home office underwriting regarding rate and coverage changes.13. Perform other duties as assigned by the SVP of Field OperationsSPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS (relationships to other people, internally and externally, cost control, etc.)• Direct contact with agents, insureds, and regulatory and service organizations.• Frequent contact with various home office, regional, and branch management staff.• Direct and substantial impact on company profitability through management of assigned specialty market segment.Requirements: SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE (special skills, knowledge of machines, procedures, etc.)• Comprehensive knowledge of assigned market segment with an emphasis on business development, product development, and underwriting.• Excellent understanding of specialty market operations.• Thorough working knowledge of specialty market underwriting principles, policies, procedures, and controls.• Thorough working knowledge of state statutes and regulations pertaining to line assignments.• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.• Experience and skill in utilizing appropriate interpersonal styles to manage group process issues, motivate and guide individuals to achieve objectives.• Excellent leadership capabilities.• Excellent problem solving, analytical, and decision making skills.• Ability to use personal computer with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software.• Extensive knowledge of management techniques, underwriting philosophy, coverages, rules, regulations, and procedures.QUALFICATIONS• Education/Credentials: Bachelor degree or equivalent; AU, CPCU, AIM• Experience: Minimum of 10 years specialty lines’ underwriting experience with at least two years experience managing a casualty oriented market segment of significant size.JOB REQUIREMENTS (as required by the ADA Americans with Disabilities Act)• Comprehend underwriting concepts related to determining risk acceptability.• Interpret and apply concepts based on state statutes, regulations, insurance coverages, company policy and procedures.• Perform effective oral and written communication to staff, company personnel and outside contacts via telephone correspondence, personal contact and electronic mail.• Access and enter accurate information into computer systems.• Access information in underwriting manuals weighing approximately 3 5 pounds.• Utilize advanced analytical skills to perform routine audits of unit supervisors to ensure proper training of staff as well as appropriate authority being exercised to limit company liability.• Review and analyze a variety of printed forms, reports, documents, policies, manuals, and other materials.• Calculate and verify proper account pricing using advanced mathematical and analytical reasoning skills.• Maintain acceptable attendance as defined in the company personnel policy.
