Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF), the nation’s largest tissue bank, is dedicated to providing quality tissue through its commitment to excellence in education, research, recovery, and care for recipients, donors and their families.    

 

We are seeking an individual who will promote and support donation and recovery efforts as both a Team Leader and Tissue Procurement Specialist (TPS). This person will build and maintain professional relationships with contracted and non-contracted organizations to enhance donation and the donation process within the service area. The Tissue Procurement Specialist will collaborate with the Supervisor to provide training and competency testing to all technical staff.

 

Job Description

 

A. Program Development:

1. Maintains professional relationships with service area coroner / ME’s, hospitals and funeral homes, in order to maximize tissue donor potentials to benefit MTF / Tissue Services.

2. If applicable, maintains professional relationships with service area Ocular Transplanting Physicians to benefit MTF / Tissue Services Ocular Program.

3. Establishes coroner / ME referral programs through MTF Service Area. Maintains and assists in establishing contractual relationships with service area coroners / MEs.

4. Identifies key communication contacts in each coroner / ME office for referral and information.

5. Acts as liaison to coroner / ME offices during donor referrals to maximize donation with regards to specific referrals.

6. Acts as liaison to service area Organ Procurement Organizations to benefit MTF / Tissue Services.

7. Builds and maintains professional relationships with service area organ procurement organization coordinators to ensure that Organ / Tissue referrals are handled appropriately.

8. Maintains professional relationships with contracted Processors to ensure a smooth donation process.B. Technical Aspects:

9. Participates with MTF Donor Coordinators in all aspects of the referral, screening, and consent process. Provides direction and input as required by Donor Coordination.

10. Serves as team leader or TPS for all ocular and tissue recovery activities within the entire service area.

11. Provides call coverage for approximately 14 days per month, including recovery and screening call.

12. When providing team leader coverage, must supervise team members through all aspects of recovery process from call through delivery.

13. Interacts with other recovery teams and hospital staff throughout all stages of donation.

14. Insures collection of all pertinent information regarding procured tissue.

15. Reviews all pertinent donor information, including, but not limited to, medical charts and medical / social history to establish donor suitability.

16. Responsible for coroner / medical examiner blood draw and screening.

17. Participate in the day to day technical operations of MTF Tissue Services.

18. Performs daily coroner calls at scheduled times to evaluate potential donors where applicable.

19. Follow-up with coroner/medical examiner office to ensure status/outcome of pending referrals as needed where applicable.

20. Monitors OPO referrals to ensure outcome of referrals. Coordinates with OPO on organ and tissue donors where applicable.

21. Closes out completed referrals through the Donor Coordinator on Statline.

22. May participate in MTF NOCC calls to determine suitability.

23. Provides all essential documentation and communication, per recovery policy and procedure, to the Team Leader and other Recovery Staff members.

24. Assists in follow-up of recovery activities with coroners/me, hospital, OPO, and funeral homes.

25. Coordinates team for recovery to include transportation to recovery location.

26. Surgically removes, cultures, wraps, and labels tissues donated.

27. Interacts with other recovery teams and hospital staff throughout all stages of donation.

28. Packages tissue to be shipped to processing facility.

29. Coordinates shipment of tissue and blood to processing facility or lab.C. Ocular: (If Applicable)

30. Becomes proficient and knowledgeable in determining suitability of ocular tissue for transplantation, through microscopic evaluation and donor record review.

31. Maintains ocular laboratory and decontamination facilities and equipment.

32. Responsible for ocular disposition.

33. Prepares and maintains all ocular billing documentation.

34. Assists in maintenance of donor records, in accordance with Quality Assurance policies and procedures.D. Administration:

35. Facilitates communication to Supervisor or AOC of costs related to recovery including Operating Room and facility usage fees, as well as airplane and limo transportation fees for the recovery team. 

36. Assemble and maintain recovery and training records, ensuring completeness and accuracy in accordance with QA policy and procedure.

37. Assists in planning and implementation of technical training program, maintaining training records, and periodic competency examination.

38. Assists managers with recruitment and training of per diem candidates.

39. Participates in orientation and training programs and seminars for new employees.

40. Provide periodic activity reports to Supervisor.

41. Prepares periodic technical reports for accrediting bodies and processors.

42. Seeks management input as required.

43. Assists with special projects and performs additional duties as assigned.

44. Participates in presenting information on tissue donation to medical community in conjunction with Donor Development Coordinator with needed.

45. Reports any relevant information to the Donor Development Coordinator regarding a donor recovery the following business day. 

 

Job Qualifications

1. CTBS and / or CEBT, or certification within 2 years of hire based on Supervisor approval.

2. R.N., P.A., O.R. technician, EMT or related experience. Previous tissue recovery experience preferred.

3. Previous experience in sterile technique preferred. Excellent understanding of anatomy, sterile technique and management of O.R. environment.

4. Ability to organize, manage and coordinate recovery team.

5. Self-directed; ability to plan and set goals; excellent organizational and leadership skills; good time management; excellent presentation skills; strong written communication skills; able to conduct meetings; leadership skills; ability to teach wide variety of subjects related to field; ability to effectively supervise others; effective in team environment; commitment to benefits of tissue transplantation.

6. Must be able to lift 100 pounds.

7. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

8. Extensive travel for recovery purposes.
