GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT

 

 

Working very independently, under very general supervision, executes protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine experiments at a professional level. This description is a general statement of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. It does not exclude other duties as assigned.

 

 The BSF technician will have routine daily duties related to the processing of samples of human origin arriving at the Center and for samples already in process from previous days' activities.  The BSF technician will be expected to learn techniques and protocols for the extraction and handling of RNA, DNA and protein fractions. The BSF technician will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of Software used for sample management and proficiency for SOPs related to activities of the BSF. You will be expected to maintain currency in training for and compliance with these SOPs and for Laboratory General Safety and Blood Borne Pathogen programs.  The BSF technician will be part of a team that has responsibility for handling clinical samples.  The technician will be expected to be knowledgeable and comply with all Partners patient privacy guidelines and Laboratory for Molecular Medicine (LMM) SOPs. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essential procedure-oriented operations.  As part of the BSF team our technicians will have duties for monitoring quality of results and reporting on any deviations from approved quality metrics. The BSF technicians are expected to participate in troubleshooting and development of SOPs and protocols.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Performs laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include various assays, specialized techniques such as electrophoresis and basic tissue culture, following established procedures or protocols. Performs with strong attention to detail, ability to focus and perform tasks accurately and reproduciblyOperates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment.Uses universal safety precautions and proper personal protective equipment to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.Completes annual  biohazard/universal precaution safety training, as appropriate.Prepares sterile media for cell cultures.Prepares solutions, reagents, following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in BSF or LMM services.Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt Calculate, transcribes and analyzes data using advanced statistical techniques.Clean and maintain lab equipment.Coordinates daily schedule of procedures and protocols to be performed.Assists in the orientation and training of new staff. All other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

BS in biological/physical science.  Must have at least one-year experience in a directly related research setting.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIIRED

 High degree of computer literacy.Sound analytical and organizational skills.Requires good oral and written communication skills.Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks and set priorities.Ability to identify potential problems and trouble-shoot solutions.Demonstrated ability to analyze data statistically and to logically present it.

 

 

Working Conditions:Normal office environment.  May travel between BWH and community locations during the course of the day.No hazardous material exposure.No exposure to dangerous or adverse working conditions.
