Special Ophthalmic Assistant Apprenticeship Program
See yourself as an eye care professional? Â
Ophthalmologists in hospitals and private practices all over the United States employ ophthalmic technicians to assist them in caring for patients with eye disease or injury. Â Ophthalmic Technicians initiate patient exams, measure and record visual status, perform diagnostic procedures, assist in clinical and surgical settings, and are valuable members of the eye care team.
We are a premier private practice located at The Eye Center of Columbus. We recognize the need for well-trained ophthalmic technicians, and are offering one-year on the job training supervised by some of the most prominent eye surgeons in the country. Â
Candidates selected by our committee will receive 12 months paid training and ophthalmology instruction. Initially, training will be devoted to core components of ophthalmology anatomy and terminology and will progress to practical hands-on experience in testing and patient history taking under the guidance and supervision of skilled clinical staff and physicians. As higher level skills are mastered, participants will be allowed to rotate through five subspecialty clinics and will work alongside our physicians, scribing and assisting in procedures to enhance skills.
Upon successfully completion of one-year of training, participants will be eligible to sit for the Certifed Ophthalmic Assistant examination administered by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).  Participants demonstrating above average proficiency and outstanding professionalism may be invited to become active members of our health care team through full time employment.
Official documentation of prior educational and work experience will be required and preference will be given to applicants who have completed college level courses and/or have some eye care related work experience.  Drug testing and a background check is required.Â
This opportunity is limited and our goal is to train and retain the brightest and the best who will desire to remain with us as employees with our practice. Â
To qualify to receive an application packet, you must submit a 1-2 page letter stating your motivations and why you feel you would be the best candidate for this opportunity. (Please note: resumes and responses sent without this letter will be discarded.)  An application packet will be sent to those fulfilling this requirements and invitations to interview will be extended based on the information in the packets once returned.
